If you want a 1gb iPod Shuffle (the clip style one) I can probably sort you out with a free one; I've got two (freebies from companies) and the Mrs got me a Nano for my birthday.

Email in trust if you are interested.

I shall email you shortly, thanks for the offer.

Up Huntingdon road, by the Fox(?) pub. Advanced Performance.

 It's amazing. So peaceful and meditative.

Yep thats the one.

With only myself for company its a little lacking :D. All i think about is how much further there is to go!

Just finished my first 6 miler, started off very slow for the first mile then settled at a pretty even pace for the next 4. I found i could up the pace a fair bit for the last one and even managed a sprint of sorts for the final 200 metres. Took me 51.5 minutes to do but im pretty sure even after a couple more once i have my pace sorted i can knock a decent amount off of that.

Feels good :D.

Excellent.

You might want to try signing up for a 10k or something like that. Having an event to train for really makes you focus if you are training on your own.

Think im a long way off doing an proper event, dont fancy coming last :D. Will see how i do over the next couple of months.

Start off at a comfortable pace, you'll find that as you get going you will be able to push that little bit harder as your body warms itself up.

Also just doing straight runs will not really boost your speed that much, as you have found. You want to be doing some sort of training to boost endurance, such as intervals.

Strangely enough after doing just 1 6 miler i managed to knock 20 seconds off my 3 mile run this evening (21m20s). I did have the ipod (thanks Chris) but spent the first few 100 metres realising that i need some headphones with ear holder thingies and went off at quite a pace as i wasn't concentrating. Thought i'd see how long i could keep it up and surprised myself. Did slow down a bit at the end but i think i definitely have it in me to run faster. Think with some music playing i'll concentrate less on how i feel and how long is left to go etc and just stick to a pace. Looking forward to knocking a chunk of time off my 6 mile run on thursday.

Yeah i saw that thead, i decided to go for the ones which wrap round the ears (Sony MDR-J10L) as i don't think the ones that have an arm round the back will be any good for me.

I was worried there because I had a pair of Sonys with the ear hooks on, and they were rubbish, but I think they are the all white ones that look like they have come from an iPod, not the ones you've gone for. Let us know how they perform :)

Just did another 6 miler, my new earphones lasted 4 steps :(, so another run with just my thoughts for company. Going to see if i can return them if not i'll try and mod them :D.

On a more positive note i did the 6 miles in 48 minutes 50 secs. Virtually 3 minutes off my last time, felt very relaxed the whole way round and can see me being able to improve on that in a only a few weeks, go me :D.

As a treat im going to spend my birthday money in may on some proper running shoes, might even splash out on some shorts etc if i have enough left too.

Smashed my 3m run time just now. Felt like going for it and was breathing heavily before the first mile was up, prob set off too quick but managed to not drop off too much pace. Clocked in at 20m 50s, 30 seconds off my previous quickest (50 seconds improvement since i started this thread). My lungs are burning up but feel great lol. I did a gentle 6m the other day and was amazed that i was only 10 seconds off my quickest, i can really feel the improvement now.

Well i've decided to splash the birthday cash and went down to Advance Pefromance in Cambridge this morning to get my first pair of proper running shoes. Was quite amazed my gait is almost perfect (always thought i ran odd) and ended up getting myself some Mizuno Wave Inspire 5's. They feel very nice so hopefuly when i get used to them my running will improve a little.

and ended up getting myself some Mizuno Wave Inspire 5's.

I have not used them but they are in a similar category to the shoes I use, light support. You may also get on with:

Asics 1120,1130 and 1140 or 2120,2130 and 2140. You can usually get the previous year's models for cheaper from JJB, now you know what you like.

Saucony Mens ProGrid Trigon 5: I like these, I like Saucony!

Saucony Paramount: Darn expensive (£110 rrp) but a real nice run. You can get them cheaper if you look around.

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 9: I have a pair but they gave me achilles issues. Some people love them though.

Lightweight but with support:

Mizuno Wave Elixir 4: what I plan to run a marathon in. Fairly light but with some good support.

Saucony Fastwitch: racing shoes with some support. Incredibly light, I love them up to half marathons. Heavier people will get away with up to 10k.

The above is a range which will fit in to your support needs and you may find knocking around for cheap on the 'web.

You may see a pair of 1120/30 knocking around JJB for about £40. It is worth getting a second pair and alternate them as it helps prevent any repetitive strain as shoes wear in different ways.

Been a while since i updated this, over a month ago i managed 10k in 47:10. Really thought i was doing well but since then was really struggling, just didnt seem to have the energy and settled into a very sluggish pace even on my 5k runs. Haven't got anywhere near my best of 20:50, not even within a minute of it.

I decided to have a few gentle runs this week and a complete rest last night and really try to make a decent time tonight. I started at a nice pace but really felt it about 6k in, using only the power of my mind i made myself continue at the same pace ;). Am chuffed to say that my new 10k record is 45:45, well pleased with myself! Shall try and beat my 5k time next week.
