John Howard might be a small man but he certainly has giant balls.

Hes Showed that we stand firm against Countrys that are trying to intimidate us while he has but he hasnt gone too far to provoke anyone too much.
IMO hes a great leader and he definitely knows what hes doing :)

Prime Minister John Howard warns a military strike against a "crazy" North Korea may be necessary to pull it into line over its nuclear test - but only as a last resort.

North Korea has become an international pariah since launching a nuclear test this week, earning the condemnation of the United Nations.

The world body is now trying to determine exactly what sanctions it should take against Pyongyang.

The UN Security Council is expected to vote within days on action proposed by the United States, including financial and trade sanctions, and international inspections of all cargo entering and leaving North Korea.

However, China still has to be convinced that such tough measures are necessary.

China's ambassador Fu Ying revealed that she had discussed the issue with foreign affairs officials.

"At the United Nations, there is a very substantive discussion and I, myself, have been engaged in discussion with the Australian DFAT as well," she said.

Mr Howard labelled North Korea a "seriously crazy regime", which would not even listen to its close friend China.

He said world leaders until last week hoped China's historic influence on the rogue state would restrain it, but it did not seem to be the case.

"Now I do hope the world can speak through the United Nations with one voice," Mr Howard told Southern Cross Broadcasting.

"But the options in a situation like this are limited.

"Nobody wants to look at military options, you can't take them off the table, you never do that, that's foolish.

"Nobody really wants to look at that as an option but they are very limited and we are dealing with a seriously crazy regime."

Foreign Minister Alexander Downer urged other countries to follow the lead of Japan, which has imposed its own sanctions against North Korea.

These include a ban on North Korean vessels calling into Japanese ports, a ban on the importation of North Korean goods and a ban, except in special circumstances, on nationals visiting Japan.

"We encourage the international community to consider the measures Japan has taken and where it's relevant and where possible to take similar, proportional steps," he said.

Australia has already stopped North Koreans visiting except in special circumstances.

"Japan's steps, like our own, takes care to avoid to imposing additional pain on the long-suffering ordinary people of North Korea," Mr Downer said.

You do relize we do actually go to war and are in Afganistan and Iraq and if there is a war in Korea we will send a **** load of troops there because they are in our region and we are very well trained and have a lot of experiance for and with jungle fighting?

As of 2005, the following aircraft are operated by the RAAF:
71 F/A-18 Hornet fighters, built in Australia under licence from McDonnell Douglas. The F/A-18 fleet has been the subject of various upgrades since it entered service in the 1980s and remains capable, but fatigue issues mean that it may not remain a viable front-line air defence option until the planned retirement date of 2015, although this is being mitigated through a center barrel replacement program.
35 General Dynamics F-111 bombers, a mixture of the original long-range F-111C type, RF-111C reconnaissance variants, and ex-USAF F-111A(upgraded to most of the C specifications) and F-111G attrition replacements. These aircraft are due to be decommissioned in 2010 but could be stretched to 2014.
19 Lockheed Martin P-3C Orion maritime patrol and strike aircraft, upgraded to AP-3C standard.
24 Lockheed Martin C-130H and C-130J Hercules transports.
14 de Havilland Canada DHC-4 Caribou tactical transports.
33 BAE Systems Hawk lead-in-fighter trainers.
67 Pilatus PC-9 advanced trainers.
24 PAC CT/4 basic trainers - better known as the "Plastic Parrot", owned and operated by BAE Systems.
5 Boeing 707s: four are dual role tanker/transports, one a pure transport. While these aircraft were previously used for VIP transport they have been used for military purposes only since the long-term lease of two Boeing 737s.
3 Bombardier Challenger 604 VIP transports.
2 Boeing BBJ 737 VIP transports.

The aussie air force could quite easily spank north korea using that lot.

"Nobody wants to look at military options, you can't take them off the table, you never do that, that's foolish.

He says military action. He's not calling for a ground invasion.

I must have been in a coma when Australia became a global military power with a logistics network in place to strike anywhere and at any time in the world. ;)

Just looking at Wikipedia myself, how the hell does a country the size of the UK have a personnel count of 107,700, whereas Australia's is 26,000, wtf

what about her ground troups?

TM

We have about 50,000-60,000 Ground Troops IIRC. Hightly trained in Jungle warfare because we need that for defence.
We have 400 SAS and we have the 4RAR which is also a cammando force that are almost as good as the SAS.
Our troops have lots of experiance and knowlage about jungle warfare because we have been fighting in jungles since WW2. We went to Vientnam aswell so learnt a lot there. I think we might have even been in Korea the first time round aswell. Pluss we have to send peace keepers to pacific islands and East Timor a lot.
We have quite a highly trained army. Even if we only have 50,000 we would still be able to cause a lot of damage. and once the Planes are involed it will help us even more. Plus if we go in im 100% sure that America will go in aswell due to some Contract/Treatie we have both signed to make sure we help each other in time of need.

But like john Howard said, Its only a last resort :)

/Runs off to find out the truth

Austarlia are an extremely capable ally, nay friend, to the US and UK in the world and their contribution in all major world conflicts in the fight for freedom can never be underestimated. If only more countries *cough*France*cough* took their responsibiities as a rich and leading world power so seriously. The RAAF is perfectly capable of bombing the North Koreans back to the stone age, however, there is no way that a ground offensive would ever work. NK has the largest standing army in the work and a massive conventional weapons cache. Australia on it's own just isn't able to put enough men on the ground to defeat them unilaterally. Even the US would struggle, we certainly would, especially at the moment.

George Bush has already ruled out military action for the moment (or backed down in my book) so other than precision air strikes against their nuclear facilities, which will provoke an all out attack on SK I would imagine, nothing will happen any time soon. A combined SK/Japan/US/UK/AZ/NZ/European force would be victorious but at massive cost to lives on both sides. Sadly, the West just will not stomach that at the moment.

Fair play to old John Howard though, the guy is a legend and I wish he was our PM instead of that slimey liar Blair.

Are you.... kidding me? Up the road, LOL. Check a map mate. ;)

They are in our Region and NKs Missles can hit as far as Brisbane if they send them off.

They are pretty much up the road on the world Scale.

Its why we are in the Asia-Pacific region
