Capello did apparently give some ground on Sunday night, agreeing to tell his players his intended starting line-up in advance of his usual policy of informing them five minutes before they board the bus.
But it seems he does not quite see why it is so important.
"After 26 games this is a new problem," he said.
"Before it was okay and the players played well every time. Now they have to know the first XI. I don't understand why.
"In my career I use this system always, why change?''
This is another thing for me, that says Capello is a moron, he's only managed normal clubs before. They'll train 5 days a week, play 2 games a week and 80% of the squad will be the same/similar over a period of 3-4 years at least, at some clubs it will be similar for a decade or more. Its COMPLETELY different, and this is Capello's problem, he's not making a single concession.
Sure when you go for a one off qualifying game to play with guys you don't know, its not that different, going to play Latvia or something is hardly stress inducing or making the players nervous. This isn't qualifying and all the worst teams are not there.
Teams are nervous, players are nervous, there isn't a small game, its not a 10 game league with only 1 half decent team in there, its 1 loss and you're in huge trouble. Spain could fail to qualify as could lots of other "decent" teams.
Not even being able to understand that theres more pressure, more nerves, and most importantly players who are in a very different enviroment to normal. Just sleeping in your own bed, in your usual life is less stressful and going to play in a tournement means you're already not in normal conditions. likewise at club level first team starters know who they are, and if they are dropped for a small game they know there are 37 more to go and its not a big deal. Again completely different in this situation but Capello has given every indication he's not made a single change to accomodate for a completely different to normal situation.
Having a go at a guy you've got to play in the next game, when all he had to do was listen, LISTEN and that would probably have simply been enough to destress the entire squad and help them relax a little. Instead he makes it clear theres no questioning him and players should just do as they are told....... which is so obviously working right now.
You can see the massive difference, teams who are expected to do very well are all having issues, people are nervous, thats what happens, its normal. The teams expected to do nothing but lose have put on a show for us, why, because when everyone expects you to fail, the pressures off, and the smaller/underdog type teams are all playing relaxed football while many of the top teams are playing pressured, uncomftable clearly troubled football and can't find their feet. It doesn't take a genius to see the players had a few ideas on how to take the pressure off a little to help them perform better, Capello can't even see why letting them stew till 2 hours before the game isn't a good idea or why it would make a difference.
