What are these for?

Do you just get some hard disks, get wireless LAN and access music/files or play games without even having to keep them on a computer?

Hope I'm right... :D

I wonder how many of you would be comfortable with PC plod having a gander at your systems ? :D

Surely you're not all gonna turn around and say that you legally own ALL of your content ? :D - I know I can't and I have only 500gb of storage !!.

Uncompressed DVD Images will take up on average about 6GB, that is only about 160 disks per TB. My family have only a few less DVD's between us, then add TV recordings, another TB would disappear quite quickly. :)

And I thought 660GB was quite big. :(

In the next few weeks that will expand to 1.16TB when I swap one of my 250GB drives out for a 500GB and use that as a backup. I am bleeding space at the moment, photos take up a huge amount of space!

Yep I have two kids, 3 and 6, children and DVD's don't mix so everything is online (in fact the kids DVD were the first to be backed up).

Okies, nearly 3tb here :p
Desktop-
1x 74gb Raptor
1x 200gb Maxtor IDE
3x 400gb Samsung & Hitachi drives
1x 500gb WD

Server-
1x 20gb Seagate
2x 160gb IDE
2x 160gb SATA

Laptop-
1x 120gb internal

Grand total of 2.74tb

I'm incredibly tight on both case space & storage across the whole system; There's about 100gb total free space, most of which is on boot/ apps drives
Aiming to add another terabyte in the next month or so, not sure yet how I'm going to swing things- Looks like a bigger case for the server TBH.

-Leezer-

What case are you using for your server? I have mine in a Coolermaster Stacker and absolutely cannot fault it for space and cooling :) The 4in3 drive bays you let you put four 3.5"HDs in 3x5.25" bays, and with some modding/gaffer tape, more inside but who has that many sata/pata ports?
And if we're including everything:
In Stacker:
Boot = 2x80GB Seagates (mirrored)
2x300GB MaxLines
2x80GB Maxtors
2x160GB WDs
250GB WD
(should be replacing the four smaller drives with 4x750GB WD RE2s in RAID5 when they're available) ;)

In desktop:
WD150 Raptor

In PVR box:
160GB boot
300GB archive

80GB in laptop

2180GB total, but I would like to join the '3TB In One Box' club :D

hmmmm ..... over 3TB but not in the one box, (although if I hooked up all the USB external drives I could probably do so) ...

Main Box
1x 250GB
2x 500GB
2x 500GB (external)
+ 2x 500GB external for backing up

Server
1x 160GB
4x 200GB (Raid5 = 600GB usable)
2x 300GB (Raid1 = 300GB usable)
(this box really needs an upgrade to 6x 500GB)

PVR
2x 500GB

other boxes have only around 300GB each roughly ....

As has been said earlier in the thread DVD images are quit large, (personally I have found an average of over 7GB), and the use of a PC pased PVR for several years leads to a build up in data.

For the record, none of the machines have bittorrent or other p2p software installed.

I have just added two more 500gigs so bring my system up to six Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 running as 3 pairs of 1TB in Raid 0 , so have 1TB for XP, 1TB for Vista and 1TB for General Storage

I also have two 250gigs in Raid which I will replace with two more 500gigs. I installed 2 x 4 slot Icy dock in a stacker 810.

So I have 3.5Tb's

I have 8 WD 500GB 5000AAKS in RAID5, can't beat having one massive drive, do I win? :)

raid.jpg

In addtion to that I have a 2TB TeraStation but its slow to transfer to and from and a Server with 2TB of space but separate drives.

Im looking into getting 2 of those 1.5TB WD NAS Storage devices if I sell my current system and replace it with a laptop. All your setups make my 1TB look small lol. All my friends say "1TB WTF you do with all that" :p lol.

Meh I need more hdd's, Prolly going to order 2x1 TB hitachi's. :p

Still have 6x ide free (not 6 ide plugs, but for 6 hdd's...) and 1 sata free .

Well, the server is in a very cheap & nasty £20 case which was first used about 3 years ago for my first build :p
Really needs replacing with something a little larger, but that would mean spending money!
The desktop is stored in a Lian-Li V1000+, and again things are pretty tight there. I could probably drop another 2-3 drives in there, but I'm trying to move as much stuff onto the server as possible for maximum availability (Have an XBMC setup beneath the TV), and I think the heat would cause some nasty problems.
I've also got SATA port availability problems in the desktop- As I've got a SATA DVD drive, I'm using all 4 ports on the motherboard & 2 more on a 4 port PCI card. The server on the other hand is doing quite well- Still got 4 SATA ports available on the motherboard, plus an spare IDE port, but no case space to put anything; Swings and roundabouts really!

Edit: FWIW, the server has 6 SATA ports on the motherboard, & 2 on a PCI card. Its also got 2 IDE ports on the motherboard and another on the same PCI card.

Trouble now is that every option is really going to cost big money, as a major component has to be upgraded somewhere to give the room to expand.

howdy all, i have quite a moddest setup (compared to some listed here), but it is nice and compact and fairly bullet proof as far as backup goes.

My media server is a mini mac running itunes to serve tv shows, movies, music and iphoto serves all me photos.. i have 2 apple tvs round the house wired into the mini thru a gigabit network backbone. 1 macbook can use the server anywhere else round the house.

dscf1846small.jpg

basically, in the first pic, the 2 vertical standing boxes on the bottom shelf are the drives (icyboxes), each has a 1tb hitachi in, the mac has them raided to provide a 2tb physical disk. Elsewhere i have roughly 1.5tb of storage for use by my render farm which consists of 4 core2quads o/c'ed to 3.2ghz each.

so online storage is about 3.5tb, but the best bit is all of that is duplicated in another set of 3 icyboxes with 1tb drives in, and an old lacie 0.5tb external drive which are bagged up and held at a remote location hence making my storage network effectively bomb proof! even if my house is bombed, my data survives (unless of course i'm bombed whilst making the backup)....
