I'm considering applying to join the army.

Was going to do it when i was 18 (Now 23) but stuck with my job and slowly worked my way up a bit (Work for local government)

The only thing worrying me a bit is i wear glasses or contacts (Contacts when doing pysical activity like my thai boxing)

Do you think wearing either would be a problem in the army?

No, lots of servicemen wear glasses.

Not sure about contacts, but my friend's going after Uni and the recruiting officer he's spoken to hasn't said anything about his glasses/contacts.

my friend duncan is some sort of Officer Cadet with the TA's, he blind as a bat and colourblind and they still let him tear about the hills with a little shooter building little bridges and stuff.....

Im not sure about this matter although one of my best friends has just gone in the Army after having to wait 6 (so many ppl wanting in it seems) and he has really bad eyesight and is meant to wear glasses but doesnt, he didnt have any problem with getting in.

The first step is to get your free army information pack and DVD here:

I'm going to join next year after I've finished college, however I might decide to be a royal marine commando instead.

EDIT: Or get yourself down to your local army careers office, actually talk to them, ask any questions etc. and you can get the pack from them direct.

If you know what this entails then best of luck. If you are going in just because its cooler then your in for a big surprise ;)

But yeah I agree if your looking for an army career then The Royal Marines is the only way to imo.

Heh I know mate don't think I'm not prepared. My mate Ben has his interview for the Marines next week, I've been training down the gym 3 - 5 days a week without fail since I was 15, I've been training with Ben for weeks now getting up at 4am to do hill runs etc. so I could join now if I wanted but yeah, it's real intense, I know they push you so hard that you'll be sick and they won't let you stop at all unless your passing out kind of thing. I'm familiar with using mental strength to keep going even when your body is telling you to stop.

I am looking at joining the forces too mate looking at army air corps or signals :) and going for officer training. I have met quite a few people going for this and i would say about 30-40 % of people wear glasses, and since this was at the briefing I would say they will not have any problem what so ever. Just that you probably couldnt be a piolot (no offence just too competitive so they are mean!).

i personally wouldn;t join the uk army, too many rules and regulations. eastern armies are less strict about you putting bullets in peoples heads. don't have to fill out any paper work either when you kill someone.
