Yes, I think slowcore and sadcore are, or have become, interchangable. I was just browsing allmusic for inspiration and happened across Sadcore. Had heard of the term slowcore applied to the types of artist you mention, but it was the first time I had heard of sadcore being used as a genre. I agree, it's not the sort of term I'd apply to them either; modern folk is much more appropriate . I think I'm going to start a new project for the year: to coin a new *core genre and have it used at least once in the music press - quietcore, electrocore, slightlypeevedcore... choices, choices.Arcade Fire said:I always thought sadcore was stuff like Low, Red House Painters, Secret Stars etc. Or maybe that's slowcore? I have trouble keeping up.
In my mind, Cat Power and Iron & Wine sit firmly in the modern folk genre, alongside Elliot Smith and Smog. Agreed that they're both really good - although I have to confess to liking Cat Powers' covers record above anything else she's done. I think that makes me unhip :/
The Covers Record is great. I think Moon Pix is the probably the hip Cat Power record; personally I'm a big fan of the You are Free. There are some excellent tracks on TCR. I really like the closers Salty Dog and Sea of Love (autoharp ) and the clever cover of Satisfaction.
