So, last week one of our members of staff told me she wanted to lower her hours to 2 days / 16 hours a week due to her currently unemployed BF had been offered a job down south and his pay would be double what she earns working for me and my wife. We agreed that due to us needing to find and employ new staff, she would continue her current hours untill the end of March.

This morning, the girl didn't show up at 8am as she should have, her mobile phone rings out or goes straight to voicemail, her mother who was put down as her emergency contact is also not answering her phone.

would you assume she's done one and left us in the lurch? It is now 11am, and still no word from her.
 
The early signs certainly point towards her disappearing, what's her character been like previously?

Dependable sort? Presumably she must have had something good for you guys to employ her (and keep her employed)?

Agree with Gilly though, I certainly wouldn't let that behavior slide especially after you've made concessions for her.
 
Bit quick to jump to conclusions. Why are you ringing the emergency contact anyway, someone being late to work is not an emergency.

Agreed - emergency contact is for emergencies. Not to be used for not turning up at work.

Might be a valid reason - personally just get on with today and see what her next working day brings. If it's a no show, try and contact her again (not the emergency number) and if not I would send a recorded delivery letter regards unauthorised absence to her home address
 
It would be unethical. She's due to be in tomorrow. I agree, its my wife that is jumping to conclusions that we so t see her again, but this is very out of character for her, she is a really good employee, has been a few times she has been late for work, down to moving house or buses late etc, but she has always been in touch to let us know she would be late, 5-10mins or so.

Reason we contacted her mother is due to this being out of character.

but in all seriousness, we are more concerned for her if anything, she has a 1 year old son, who is looked after by our employee's mother when she is working, this is also why we phoned the mother.

Also we run a childrens day nursery, so this is why it's important due to child:staff ratios.

Glad your not my boss. :p Also if you rang my Mum she would tell you to **** off, She's good like that. :D

Anything could have happened & being 3 hours late does not warrant being chased by your employer.
 
Phone the police, set the dogs on her, go round her house with a bowl of chicken soup and social services.

This will sort it out for you.

been trying since 8:30am, till 11am. there's not much more we can do.

only problem is, she has recently moved house and we don't have her current address.

will have to send her AWOL letter to her mum :D

If you have real concerns for her safety, contact the Police on 101.
