It would seem it's all doom and gloom for AMD as of late but JPR reports that in q3 AMD's along with Nvidia had a big jump in Discrete Gpu shipments.

According to JPR, overall GPU shipments are up quarter-over-quarter - with AMD's overall GPU shipments up 15.8%, while NVIDIA enjoyed an uptick of 21.3%. The PC market as a whole increased by 7.5% quarter-over-quarter but decreased 9% year-over-year. NVIDIA's discrete GPU shipments were up 26.3% according to JPR, while AMD's discrete GPUs spiked by 33.3%.

my brain doesnt understand this lol ><

From Q2 to Q3 this year, PC sales went up 7.5%
Comparing Q3 2014 to Q3 2015, PC sales were down 9%

this is all from the PC MarketWatch which covers all PC sales

the AIB report usually follows along about 1-2 weeks later, which will show more information about discrete card sales

Quarter-over-quarter looks at this quarter vs the previous quarter (Q3 15/16 vs Q2 15/16), and year-over-year looks at this quarter vs. the same quarter last year (Q3 15/16 vs Q3 14/15).

If Nvidia have 82% of the market...

AMD's overall GPU shipments up 15.8%, while NVIDIA enjoyed an uptick of 21.3%

Means Nvidia have stretched that 82% a little further. Where is the AMD good news ?

AMD's desktop shipments increased 33.33% from last quarter

Nvidia's desktop discrete shipments were up 26.35% from last quarter

the thing is, 33% gain on 18% is still pretty small, so if there has been a gain in desktop market share for AMD it is like 23%/77%
it is a marginally better situation for AMD but selling 2.2million units is still no where near the 4-6million units per quarter they were shipping a couple of years ago

Nvidia were stronger in mobile which is where the 15% vs 21% overall comes from - they both gained a bit of market share back from Intel

In a growing market you can afford to have a shrinking market share because you still experience growth, like AMD has just done. The real problem is in a shrinking marking, you have to be gaining market share to even stay even. AMD's loss of market share in a declining market has been a double whammy and that is why their profits have nose dived, the same goes for their CPUs as well.

The way the results are presented is a little confusing, you might be right about the division of discrete vs mobile but that would indicate Nvidia has done very well with mobile parts.
