JRPG's, where to begin....

Shadow hearts is expensive now (well, about £25 but thats expensive for a PS2 game :p)

And Final Fantasy XIII has gun swords but you can't miss that when it comes out  The main characters are cool this time round.

I loved FFX, need to finish it again for the third time :P

FFXII was meant to be really good, but thats on PS2 and I'm currently waiting for FFXXIII next year!

another vote for shadow hearts, and shadow hearts 2! both are great games. good story too. i think the main character yuri is a good char (not an ass as someone mentioned :P )

Don't all JRPG's have anime graphics, including FF7?

Depends on how you look at it.

Whilst all JRPG's have Anime-style graphics one way or another, it depends on how it is used for the overall artstyle i.e. full Cel-Shading or Texturised 3D polygon look, etc.

I mean compare Star Ocean: The Last Hope to something like Eternal Sonata, you can easily see huge differences in their artstyles.

Ahh Shadow Hearts. I always forget to mention that series for some reason, one of my favorite on the PS2.

I loved Yuri, I thought he was one of the most original and unique main characters the JRPG genre has ever had. He wasn't an ass, he just didn't take **** and acted a lot like a young man does.

I loved the really quirky darkness of the first and the themes it touched on. The second was a bit more mainstream, but was generally a better made game with higher production costs.

This might be a good place to get back into JRPGs if you have a PS2.

I didn't say he was a bad character, him being abrasive and ignorant at times made him a lot more appealing than the standard jrpg emo stereotype, which was the point I was trying to get across for the OP.

I forgot Persona. I would give that a +1.

I've not played them yet but I know I want to. I like the interesting setting.

Right ignore everything I've just said. Regardless of what i don't like about the JRPGS, I'm going to put them aside and give one a go regardless of its style.

So please, recommendations!!

In that case adding on from the suggestions before for the 360,

Tales of Vesperia <--- This one is highly recommended
Infinite Undiscovery
Eternal Sonata
Blue Dragon
Enchanted Arms

Not one of them matches the Final Fantasy series. But then, Thats always the case. Ohwell, FF13 cant be that far away can it? :p

I would personally say the Tales of... series of games are up there. Whilst obviously not as famous as Final Fantasy, it's still a popular franchise of it's own.

Tales of Vesperia is out in, well, today I believe. Its supposed to be the best JRPG on current gen consoles.

I should get mine today, so I'll let you know my first impressions over the weekend. :)

I'd argue that Lost Odyssey is right up there with the FF series; even games(tm) agreed when they said it was equal to FFXII. Also Tales of Vesperia (which is out tomorrow) has had universal praise.

To the OP, Infinite Undiscovery is not a great jrp but it's also not bad and Star Ocean whilst looking slightly better doesn't seem to be winning many people over.

For 360 ones I've finished I'd rate them:

Lost Odyssey > Blue Dragon >>> The Last Remnant >> Infinite Undiscovery >>>> Eternal Sonata > Enchanted Arms >>> Phantasy Star Universe....
