JSA outweighs working part time...

Rock and hard place, not working for a long time will demoralise you.

Even if you technically aren't making money, you are getting out of the house, meeting people and generally staying mentally healthier.

I was without a job for a month about 10 years ago, and despite me thinking i am mentally strong, it was very demoralising.

Get out and about, if nothing else you will get to laugh at all the slags running about and it might open other doors and get you into full time work.

but nothing beats the satisfsction of working and not being a bum.

If only that was true.

I don't work for the satisfaction at all. If i could spend my days how i wanted to and still get paid, you better believe i would give up work!

The problem is with the JSA being too generous to people.

Most places don't have these.

Really? They're pretty common around here, we have a few different services running (admittedly at reduced numbers) all night.

Fair enough.

I believe you can apply for help with your first months travel costs if you are currently on JSA. I know people in London who have gotten this, not sure about elsewhere though...

I have never seen a night bus where i live....

Also the ops joining the army in April so its not like hes planning on staying on JSA...

shh i knew the dumb people around here when they couldnt work this out and tried to **** me off about claiming JSA :)

Its too generous if people are just slacking off and taking the mick... but for someone who genuinely needs it - you can barely scrape by.

I was on it for a short while myself due to moving to a new area and then the job falling through - the area was absolutely dire for finding employment... there was a regular number of new job openings coming up - enough that I had interviews most days of the week - but with 200+ people applying for the simplest of jobs you really had to shine to stand a chance of finding employment. I barely scraped through on JSA and I'm good with money and don't live that lavish a lifestyle.

I was fortunatly thrown a life line, given the opportunity to move back out the area - which I couldn't have afforded myself - and found a job in around a month in a different place.

So after working out that ill earn £73 quid a week for 3 nights work at a local nightclub (15 hours) about 8 miles away and that to travel there and back is gonna cost me about £25 a week I'm £2 down on what id get for sitting at home on my pc all day. Ive rang the local job centre and they said i couldn't get anything except my stamp being paid (about a fiver i believe). I would really like the job since its something i want to do but i really cant see the point in loosing more money than i already get. I have a interview tomorrow for said nightclub.

Take the job and stop sponging off me you lazy sod :p

Just go for the interview, if you get it, well done. If you dont, no big loss and look for something with more hours.

We would be in a pretty crap country if we all claimed our tax back!

It why JSA should be tied to compulsary attendance for voluntary work, or some form of compulsary training, or better some form of national service (not military related).

If they want JSA then get the hell down somewhere 9-5 every single day they want paid for JSA, many would stop claiming it, and lots would go find jobs.

This isn't aimed at the folks who have worked all their lives and have been paid off recently, and are now claiming, its aimed at the 1.5million others who didn't ever bloody work, its part of the reason we're in such problems. Billions each year in free cash to people doing nothing, who know its better to do nothing than do something.

Make the something compulsary.

Would you qualify for income support too?

Less than 16 hrs a week, 16 to 59 yrs old, low income - sounds about right?
