Cyclist should pay road tax for the maintance of the road. They should also have number plates so they are held accountable for there actions.
.

YOU ARE JOKING RIGHT?!?!?!

how much damage does a Cyclist DO to a road?

none

How much damage does a 18wheeler lorry do to a road?

taxing cyclists...... how smart.......

(ps i've not ridden a bike for 3 years but thats mainly because its unsafe to do so around my area)

I think you are missing the point. My point is:

1) i was taughted to drive, pasted a test on the thoery of road use and a practical test to ensure i understood it. This shows i am safe to use to roads. I start learning how to drive once i start on my own. Cyclists do not!

I learned how to ride a bike. I read the highway code before I went on the roads to figure out how they worked. If I didn't do that, I'd be dead by now.

2) if i drive dangerously, i have a number plate traceable to me so a traffic enforcement unit can show me the error of my ways, endorse my license or take it off me as i am not safe to use roads. Cyclists Do Not

If I cycle dangerously, I die. Simple.

3) If any of the 2 above measures should fail, i have insurance so any damage done to 3rd party property can be fixed at no cost to the owner. Cyclists Do Not!

And if a person jumps on your bonnet and puts a dent in it before running off, they don't have any insurance you can claim off either. Cars do a lot more damage to other objects than people and bikes because, guess what, they're bigger and go faster. If you have the details of a cyclist who's damaged your car and have a witness, you're perfectly entitled to sue for damages to your car. What's your problem?

Overall the people in charge go out of there way to ensure i am safe as a driver but any retard can get on a bike without even knowing the high code exists and ride on public roads. What is that all about?

Overall, some motorists go out of their way to ensure that I'm *not* safe as a cyclist. These people should be shot in the face. Twice.

Cant believe I aint posted in the thread, I wanted to stay out as I know there will be smug drivers posting.

I have been cycling nearly every where since April on my bike, I did it to get fit then it turned it to a full time passion, I drove for about 4 years in the car then I got a XTC and thought summer is coming I will ride to work.

It was easy and quick and cheaper than driving, then I started to go to the gym on it after work, even quicker cutting through the traffic and going down the canal, then I just stopped driving after my car broke. Still paying for it, still paying road tax, still paying car insurance as its still on the road.

So don’t give me this rubbish about "I, I ,I I ,I pay road tax, insurance, etc."

Also I have seen how bad people are at driving I was nearly wiped out on the path early on, I phoned for a kebab at the side of the road on the way home, then a lad in a red corsa did at least 50 round a bend, a up hill bend and how it did not just slide on the path I will never know.

Also a lad in a blue fiesta was so in a hurry he got a 4 way junction, he was behind an old chap in a silver car and he was turning right into the oncoming traffic, the lad in the fiesta pulled to the right of him reving his enging like a **** and the lights changed to red so he pulled out overtook the silver car  and a red van turing left into the path of the fiesta had to slam on.

ERM, the right i have is the fact i pay vechicle exercise duty, petrol duty, insurance, for driving lessons, a thoery test, a practicle and for an MOT. While cyclists pay sweet fa!

How would you like it if i got a couple of my chavtastic mates in our cars and we drove 2 abreast at 13mph down the a56 at 8:15am on a monday while you where on your way to work, made you very late and fustrated.

PUBLIC ******* ROAD mate, simple as. Cyclist have as much right on the road as you do and even a horse has as many rights as you so lump it.

And cyclist pay sweet fa as they don’t erode the roads, pollute the air, cause congestion and how many cyclists have killed young children, done hit and run.

but your "generalisation" is worse than mine, most cyclist, Dont have insurance, most car drivers Do, therefore how were you to say that "motorists are scheming coniving slackers who avoid paying what they are leaglly obliged to" ??

I think there is a reason for cyclists not having insurance, maybe the number of people killed by cars every year or the amount of accidents occur every year from car crashes.

A cyclist can’t put his pedal down to hit stupid speeds in a suburban area, cars can, when you drive a car you should always have the thought in your head "wait, insurance, if I speed or crash It could go up"

I have 3 NCB yet I have ridden a bike for the last 5 months and the only thing I have done wrong is been on your "road".

1) I passed my driving test with 3 minors, been driving for 6 years with not one single RTA or bump. Learnt the Highway code for both cars AND cyclists. So in thoery I am a better driver and cyclist than you and should move out of the way for me on my bike!

2+3) Pfft, as I said cyclist are no way in the same league as a 1-2 ton car that can hit speeds of 60mph in 6-14 seconds.

Dony you think this goverment would impose laws to make more money from cyclist i.e tax, insurnace, cycle licence. They dont as its worthless and pointless.

Ahh, yes that is because since i pasted my driving test for a car i can now legaly and safely drive a HGV, bus, motorcycle, moped, trackter. With your logic its all the same. I will contact the DVLA and have them update my license immediately.TO say your a better driver than me is a tad petty considering you don't me, what i do for a living or what driving qualifications i have.

As for bad drviers, i know the exact ones you mean, i see them every day and think u bunch morons how long is it before you kill someone. There are some equally poor cyclists, if cyclists want the same respect as a car then respect the same rules we do

cyclists cant complain about the state of the roads as they dont pay to use them.

as a motorcyclist i do complain about the state of the roads :D

To be honest dont mind cyclists in general but most of the cyclists around here, ride two abreast, overtake other cyclists without checking behind them, cut accross roundabouts and jump red lights. Personally I think they should be heavily fined for it

Just take an issue with you here. Roads are funded by general taxation (therefore it is highly likely that a cyclist has paid towards the road, you do pay VAT on bikes and equipment and as far as I'm aware I'm not exempt from paying income tax are council tax because I cycle).

VED is based on carbon emissions- you could run a car on the road without having to pay any VED if you have a "green" vehicle. Therefore, the petrolheads arguement about paying for roads is an absolute non starter.

I do but drivers seen to think they have the right of way and will pull out on a bike thinking nothing of it.

Also a cyclist needs more repect on the road than a car, if a car hits a cyclist at 30+ mph your talking about serioud is not fatal injuires. Its esy just to get in a car and drive and not bother about looking ahed of you, I have to look at every single junction and side road, even at roundabouts I am cautious and sometimes I will slow down and make sure the car waiting isnt going to pull out.
