Jules Bianchi thread for updates and discussion

Caught up with a friend yesterday who was a nurse at a brain injury unit in the midlands. She isn't a motorsports fan so didn't know the details but from the description of events and time frame it wasn't particularly cheery.

'Usually 5-10% chance of high level recovery* and 25% meaningful recovery, by which we deem being able to interact at some level with outside stimuli in a controlled manner, odds may be a little higher in this case due to high overall health and immediate medical care. Most patients with that type of injury don't normally receive medical care until 20-30 mins after the incident, having a doctor on scene so soon after is very beneficial. No positive news at this point of time is very concerning, most patients are given 2 weeks at which point care switches from recovery to preparation for the worst. A month with no mention of change of state or care procedure would be highly suggestive of fundamental if not clinical brain death.'

All of that obviously depends on what is actually going on as much like Schumacher everything is being kept fairly internal. Contradictory reports about whether he is breathing for himself etc make it mostly guess work.

*Hammond style, back walking and talking but with a few personality changes.

It was a very glum and sucky conversation. :(

I'm surprised there has not been any link or press coverage on De Villota's very similar crash and subsequent death

That's because the only links are a head injury and a Marussia. de Villota's accident did not happen in unsafe conditions or under race conditions at all, it didn't involve a standard piece of trackside equipment, and she appeared to have recovered.

Sorry for the late reply. Yes, I work for one of the other teams.

Marussia going into administration so soon after the crash seems more than just a coincidence.. I do wonder if they've lost some form of financial backing since the incident. Shame to potentially lose two teams so quickly. Obviously this pales in comparison to Jule's horrific crash.

I am not sure how much I can say so for now I will just say that it is a coincidence.

If he was encouraged to go faster, I'm sure all radio transmissions are recorded so it will be made public during the investigation.

The lack of news is worrying. Marussia going into administration can't be a coincidence, and I imagine it is linked with the team only running one car in the previous race. 'Mark of respect' my arse, business it business. I'll bet funding was cut.

They both wedged their f1 car underneath a vehicle, not the same scenario but it is the same outcome

New official statement, no change.

“It will be four weeks this coming Sunday since Jules’ accident and he remains in the Mie General Medical Centre in Yokkaichi. His condition continues to be classified by the medical professionals here as critical but stable. Although we have no new information to give, we recognise that there are a huge number of people all around the world who are supporting Jules and willing him on in his fight. We owe it to his many fans to acknowledge the continued outpouring of messages, and to provide some information, however brief it may be.

“Jules does indeed continue to fight. Although there have been some reports suggestive of plans for Jules’ treatment, at this time his fight will continue here in Yokkaichi. We are taking things step by step.

“Once again, we would like to offer our sincere appreciation for the patience and understanding being shown towards our family at this very difficult time. We also continue to be comforted by the knowledge that Jules is receiving the best possible care at the Mie General Medical Center, with the doctors here remaining in constant contact with the neurosurgeons at the University La Sapienza of Rome, and Professor Gerard Saillant, President of the FIA Medical Commission.

“We will provide a further update when it is appropriate to do so. In the meantime, thank you to everyone who continues to keep Jules in their thoughts and prayers.”

so its likely they will turn the life support machine off one day if no improvement at all?

I would be surprised, I'm sure the money is there to keep it going however small the chance.

It's so sad that the discussion is now at the stage where turning off the life support is being discussed... Poor Jules :(

i'm not a medical expert so won't pronounce him dead. Schumacher isn't. I hope he recovers, but I imagine the rehabilitation will be a very long process and no clue on what permanent limitations he may have. it seems his days in F1 are over. unfortunate we have lost another promising driver. really thought Kubica could have won a world championship in the right team :(

Sadly it's an indication of the danger of the sport - no matter how safe the cars are, when you're racing at 200mph, something at some point is going to go wrong. Unfortunately this happened in awful conditions and circumstances, but those are the risks you take.

No change in a month is a very long time. IMO it'll be a miracle if he makes it through this :(

I noticed Jenson Button has tweeted #forzaJules again this morning, has anyone seen any updates anywhere? :(

Jules is reportedly breathing unaided now and has been moved to a hospital in Nice.

No longer in an artificial coma but still unconscious and considered in a critical but stable condition.

About as good a news as you could hope for right now I reckon.

Definitely, any good news is very welcome, keep fighting Jules.

Good news and bad, still totally unconscious but at least he's breathing and vital signs are stable.

His family say Bianchi is now breathing unaided and that his “vital signs are stable” but that “his condition is still classified as ‘critical’.” His condition was considered “sufficiently stable”, though, to be transported aeromedically to Le Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Nice in France on Tuesday night.
