The European Union needs its own army to help address the problem that it is not “taken entirely seriously” as an international force, the president of the European commission has said.

Jean-Claude Juncker said such a move would help the EU to persuade Russia that it was serious about defending its values in the face of the threat posed by Moscow.

However, his proposal was immediately rejected by the British government, which said that there was “no prospect” of the UK agreeing to the creation of an EU army.

“You would not create a European army to use it immediately,” Juncker told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper in Germany in an interview published on Sunday.

“But a common army among the Europeans would convey to Russia that we are serious about defending the values of the European Union.”

Juncker, who has been a longstanding advocate of an EU army, said getting member states to combine militarily would make spending more efficient and would encourage further European integration.

“Such an army would help us design a common foreign and security policy,” the former prime minister of Luxembourg said.

“Europe’s image has suffered dramatically and also in terms of foreign policy, we don’t seem to be taken entirely seriously.”

Juncker also said he did not want a new force to challenge the role of Nato. In Germany some political figures expressed support for Juncker’s idea, but in Britain the government insisted that the idea was unacceptable.

How would this work given we have NATO and that the likes of the UK, Germany and France are big contributors to it.

Would the EU army come under their control?

What happens if NATO want to take action somewhere but the EU doesn't want this new army to be involved.

It seems like an utterly barmy idea to me.

Of course the Germans warm to the idea, they will be the ones in charge of it all. The final phase in the creation of a unified European state.

Scrap national borders and sovereignty, just become a country called "europe". Single currency, single set of borders, single government.

It seems like an utterly barmy idea to me.

Seems like a great idea to me. Progression towards a one world government.

Remember what happened the last time they had an army .

Having got that out the way it seems like a good idea on paper bringing the countries closer together on the other hand if it did get to the point of war do they prioritise defence of certain countries on who donated more or less?

I'm most likely reading into it too much but it appears they want a war with Russia.

How do we think Russia would act? Oh yes, I'm sure this would improve relations! Putin would have no cause for concern!!

Who cares? One thing I'm pretty sure about is that we shouldn't not do things because Putin might not like them. Having said that, I'm pretty sure that Putin would look on this favourably - Russian military doctrine calls for Germany to run western Europe and Russia to run eastern Europe.

Juncker’s been smoking his federal weed again. :p

We have NATO and don’t need another organisation to defend us collectively. It’s just another excuse to give EU bureaucrats the opportunity to waste even more money and achieve nothing. It most certainly wouldn’t be a rapid reaction force and without doubt have more reverse gears then ever seen before.

Dream on baby, dream on....

The way things are going with our rapid de=arming of our once proud armed forces we really won't have any credible force ourself so may as well ask Europe to defend us.

And what do you do if that "One World Government?" turns out to be a bad one?

There is no guarantee that such an institution would be a benign one. It could just as easily be similar to the DPRK.

Indeed, just think about how the EU enthusiasts would act if they had a totally free reign (I am sure that I remember some unelected EU mouthpiece some years ago commenting on how we were moving to the "Post democratic era" and another suggestion that opposition to EU membership should be criminalised as "Xenophobia". )

So theres nato, and the un, plus a lot of the bigger eu countries (ourselves included) can hit pretty hard, and they think thats not enough?

Im not worried about having a conventional war with Russia tbh, they talk a big game but they know as well as the Americans do they cant start a fight because it might start as a conventional war but it wont end as one.

Perhaps if the countries in the EU hit their 2% defence spending targets they would have enough force to combat Russia without having to force the UK and France to help them via additional EU legislation.
That's what's really going on here, the UK and France holds the biggest chunk of military power by quite a margin, and we Happen to be among the furthest away from Russia, so have some of the least inventive to act. So they have to steal our power.

Lol

Why do you think this would be a good thing? It's a ludicrous idea.

So let me get this right we have the opportunity to get:

Leopards rather than Challengers
Rafaels for our carriers
G36

No brainer really.
