canceling your card now isn't all that advisable. In theory it could be seen as fraud, and the fact that you phoned your bank up and told them you've just authorized the transaction isn't going to go in your favor in the slightest.

Having said that you should have some rights to cancellation under general consumer law, maybe try CAB....

FYI such companies are known as canvassers, and established used car sites such as Autotrader have been taking steps to counteract them, see:

especially if you're the one selling something

ask to see the manager of the bank and if they still dont allow the payment to be stopped,go higher than the bank manager.

Why is it the bank's fault? They'll just be following the set procedures.

Why? The OP consented to the charge at the time, and provided his details without force.

It's only afterwards he thinks "Oh, I shouldn't have done that" - it's his own fault, and nothing that the bank can or indeed should do.

Guys, be a little easier on the chap. Amazingly enough, not everyone knows everything about everything like us. There was a time many many years ago when I had no idea what a canvasser was. Fair enough I didn't fall for any of that but we have all brainfarted at some point in our lives........

Telesafe works very well in my experience since Autotrader made it available. I can't remember the last time I got a canvasser calling up

Hate to say it, but the OP probably deserved to have the money taken this way. Better that than he lose a grand at a fare on a game of basketball hoops, or purchase a timeshare hut in Zimbabwe etc etc. A fool and his money are easily parted. Learn from it!.

Anyway, I like to play with these people.. when I'm selling a car (doesn't happen that often but these parasites always turn up), they call and give me the speil so I say "that sounds really cool, let me get a pen hang on" then put the phone down and walk off.

Over 4 minutes is my record so far before they get the message and hang up.
