FishFluff, you are forgetting that the majority of our railway infrastructure is 20+ years old? Some parts of the line have been there since the late 1800s.

Eh? That's his point?

Oh I know, but it's about time something was done about it. Compared to the rest of Europe our railways are a complete shambles, but that's another topic all by itself

It's fine in a suitcase, just obviously don't try and take it as hand luggage.

Japan are so far ahead of us in some areas it's unreal. Mobile phones that you can use as a cash card at vending machines, a rail infrastructure that's light years ahead of ours, intelligent toilets that clean your backside for you, giant robots*... :p

*may not actually contain giant robots

Lightyears are a measure of distance not time, :p thought I would be pedantic and point that out.

I'm stating the reason why our tracks are old. It's not because we don't care, it's because most of our tracks were laid down in a time when most countries didn't even know what a train was, least of all had any tracks of their own.

It would be functionally impossible to sufficiently modernize the entire rail infrastructure in the UK. God only knows the hundreds of companies that have tried over the past 50 years.

Japan's super-dooper railway infrastructure is a product of late-20th century engineering. I'm sure if we had decided to install a national infrastructure in 1960 as opposed to 1860, we'd have a very reliable/modern infrastructure as well.

Thus is my point.

Will it cut a man into two equal halves?

Actually if the right person is using the sword it will make a clean cut slice through a 6" diameter piece of bambo. Which according to the narrator of the documentroy i was watching at the time is the same as two human torso's. So yes it will

Anyways back onto the matter. :)

Please tell me you got a katana whilst you were there?

If one goes to Japan one must get a sword, if you for ones self, for me! :(

Dont know about the rest of you, but the samurai sword is one of the most beautiful things any man can make...

/Waits for all kinds of comments :)

depends if u want an REAL katana or just a replica.
a REAL katana is going to cost u a few grand.
takes about 3 people to make one and u will need a licence to keep one.

Have been in Japan for almost 3mths now :D

I know they cost a lot, but they are without a doubt worth it. I envy you so much being out there.

Are you thinking of getting one?

Get a PPK only costs £200 last time I checked and there are still some very nice Paul Chen Katanas on the market for under a grand although a custom built one from a reputable swordsmith would be freekin awesome!!!

would love to get one :)
but i think will wait for a few years and train in the arts to properly appreciate them.
right now a bokken will do :)

Mundu, those paul chen katanas are very nice. but was referring to one made by a reputable swordsmith in japan. Only information source i've got so far have been my fiancee's parents. They're obviously Japanese and am in Japan atm trying to sort out our marriage
They sell japanese art and craft stuff and have sold a few katanas before.

really need to brush up on my japanese so i can actually find out more from experts

Saying that it's light years ahead refers to it being in another galaxy where technology is more advance.

It would be cool to have a real kantana well worth 3k. Even better if you are trained in how to use it. Not sure that they would treat westerner to that privilege tho.

I'd love to go to Japan, it looks amazing! Although I have heard its a really expensive place to go (beers being like £6 a pint! luckily i dont like beer!)

I absolutly love japanese art, especially anime! And their culture, and their fashion it all looks amazing!

theres this new thing called oneseg technology in japan.
it allows special mobs to watch digital TV on there phone. the quality is amazing! it also records as well  ..
gosh im proud to be japanese

YEahh expensive. i think beer is good but drink sake if you go to japan.

It is not expensive over here....when I go out for a few beers, the average cost is about £3. And that's in the city. It's even better when you get nomi houdai (drink as much as you want - over a time limit, usually 2 hours) and that costs around £10 to £15.

My mates been over 4 times now and has just booked another 3 weeks to go back again. He always comes back with some amazing gadgetry, for one a camera the size of a credit card, but its better than a lot of digital cameras ive seen. He had the Nintendo DS on his first return trip, and IIRC was a good few motnhs before released here.

He says he eventually wants to live there as a Jap/English convertor and hes doing A levels now and has been accepted into uni for a degree in japanese.
