Just been to look at some cars.

Rather spend £7688 on a 52 plate 530i Sport manual at auction ;)

Id rather spend it on an Alfa GTA of some sorts but thats obviously not going to be a new car with a full warranty and a low insurance group. so it doesnt really help the original poster. I obviously know what you mean though fox

I just think at this corner of the market a pre registered ibiza is excellent value.

...umm, first car, full tank of petrol, ace.

but not wishing to dis your driving skills, but there is a reasonable chance you will put a dent in it.
I did, lots of times :D

buy a cheap car, learn to avoid denting it, then buy a nice car with your 1yr NCD.

This is unfortunately true, more likely a little parking whoopsie than anything else but on a brand new car thats going to hurt.

Hell, even I scraped the back end on my first car against my mates wall as I was backing onto his drive and I'm quite probably the best driver on this forum :o

;) :p

Ok been researching with my bro who is a car salesman and i'm going to go for the 1.9 multijet diesel 130bhp which if i shop around i can find for £10k.

Insurance i can get for £1400 fully comp :D

Seems a good deal.

I could buy on finance but i have the dosh to buy outright so i probably will.

Seems such a shame to plow £10k into something you WILL get bored of, only when you do, it'll be worth £6k. £4k lost.. for nothing, when a £2k Saxo or something would do the job, be worth £1k when you get bored, leaving you with £9k left over to spend on something cool when you want to upgrade.

I agree. Nothing wrong with wanting a decent car when you start off, but spending 10 grand on one is quite crazy. You don't seem to have been driving long, so it's far better to get something with a smaller engine that is easier to control, and won't make you cry if you dent it. Can't see the point in buying a new car at any age really, to be honest - the loss of value astonishes me.

Even a few thousand will still buy you a damn nice car to be proud of, as well as get more used to driving in.

Just seems like you want a brand new shiny car for the sake of having one, without having considered the consequences.

But whatever happens, enjoy your new wheels, while they last.

Once you have a bit of experience 10k can get you some VERY nice and much more fun cars! I'd get something decent but far cheaper for your first car, learn the ropes a bit then spend big money (well 10k is a lot ot me) on something much nicer!
Just think, 10k could get you everything from an absolute stonker of an impreza turbo to a fully loaded 5 series BMW.

By the looks of things he hasn't read a single reply to his thread anyways.

£10k for a new small hatchback?

Agree with everyone else - you'd be a mug to spend that. Get something a bit older and save yourself a pot of cash.

Btw - Grande Punto? Masturbation material? I'd spend some of that big stack of cash on some new glasses tbh :)

The Fiat Grande Punto is £10515 but could probably get it for about £10k.

This is my first car by the way.

I've found insurance on the Fiat for £1850 fully comp on Bell.

Anyone know of any cheaper car insurance providers i should look at too?

Thanks,

Andy

You will definately regret spending that amount on these cars in a few months/year. Go for a 3k ish hatch for a year or 2 get your ncb and then get something decent with the money you have saved.

10k gets you a car you would not regret buying once you have some NCB and a coupple of year experience insurance is more palateable. A 3-4 year old fast car like a low mileage Impreza WRX (pre facelift) or a really low mileage Clio 182 as an example.

Buying a brand new shopping trolley hatchback at your age shows you have more money than sense.
Buy second hand and save yourself 7 grand.

Judging on some of the original posters 'masterpeice' threads in GD I fear we may all be wasting our time.

Although how part time work in a phone shop at 18 gets you £10k, in cash, in savings, is something I'd like to know!

Possible I'd say, one of my flatmates form uni was working in the carphone, he was earning a LOT of commision. In the region of £500 a week.

I can seen where people come from when they say "don't spend 10K on a first car / hatchback" but I bought a brand new Seat Ibiza when I was 18 and I don't regret it at all, I loved having a brand new car, and warrenty / the insurance of havin everything under warrenty is nice.

Each to their own.

Admitted the ibiza is a bit plastic but thats because its the cheapest out of the VAG group, they have to cut costs... Ive got a 1.4 SX 54 plate if you want to know anything particular?

If he is earning £24,000 a year doing PART TIME hours at a phone shop, I will eat my hat, with ketchup, and put photos in this thread.

yipes 10grand on a first car and its only a punto ;o

wish i had 10grand to spend on my first car :D
bought a fiesta zetec for £1900, clean as a whistle, not fast but sorts out the ncb for a year, next shall be the fiesta zs! :D

Clearly you dont read GD threads then as i have been full time for a couple of months now.

Where i got my money from is no business of yours either :)

And yes i earn around £20k a year which includes comission of an average week, sometimes i excell that and get a lot more :)
