Got a mac mini off the bay, 1.6 ghz dual core, 2gb ram so pleased with that.

I've seen about CPU upgrades and people seem to put in t7200's, and then various people have put in ssd drives for the maximum levels of performance !

Basically all I'll be using it for is a desktop machine, I'll put on office and use it for web browsing, iTunes and on the odd occasion some very very basic video editing from my minidv camcorder after track days.

Is there any point doing these upgrades?

I think it was 281 delivered so I'm happy with that. Seller has told me that she can't get to the post office due to snow though so she's bringing it to London for me (y)

I'm intrigued about these CPU upgrades? I thought the chip was soldered to the board? Do you have a reference?

I'd swap out the HDD first. Swapping the 80GB for a modern 250GB in my 2006 MBP made an appreciable difference. Any 9.5mm 2.5" SATA drive should work fine.

CPU - dunno. Depends what the T7200 will set you back as to if it's worth it.

its very easy to do takes 10 mins if youve done pc updates before, just first time slow n easy

cpu is worth doing if you use handbrake etc but otherwise not really ssd is a nice treat but again for what your talking id put a 320gb in and use it as media device as well

but there easy to do loads of videos on web how to..

Correct, the hard part is going to be getting in. Official apple guidelines say you should use a putty knife.

Yeah, still a bit tricky and I've been pulling PCs and laptops apart for many many years. Needs to be a very thin flexible putty knife, I ended up getting an £6 one from the local DIY warehouse.

The CPU is soldered in on on my 2009 Mini.

Have a look at iFixit.com for a good guide on pulling it apart.

I don't understand, a mac mini for £280, then £80 on a new cpu.

Another £100 (HE discount) and you could have bought the latest mac mini with the latest gpu, snow leopard, ilife 09 plus this would have a 3 year warranty.

It just don't understand it.

I put a T7600G and 4GB ram in my old mac mini it flewwwww

However theres no point upgrading it, you should have just bought a new one if you can afford that.

80 quid for a t series cpu? sod that!!

At most, I was going to consider 30-40 quid.. Won't be doing that then :)

Jamal - Completely agree with regards to the costing, if I could have got the cpu cheap I would have done it, wont bother now :)

I would leave it as it is matey, should be plenty for you :)

When you get a new computer don't sell the Mac Mini, it's a perfect media centre machine.

Have a search for my media centre thread. It will tempt you ;)
