Hi guys and gals - just bought a new car - a ford focus zetec climate 1.6l TiVCT. The only reason is I got it for a really good price! I've been looking around for insurance and the cheapest I can get is £2000 - is this normal?

I'm 21 DOB: 31/12/84
0 no claims
Driving for less than a year - 7 months

Any ideas, recommendations guys?

I know its no help and too late now, but ALWAYS get insurance quotes before buying anything, the above is a prefect example of this.

Best advice is phone around as many insurance companys as you can, no-one can tell you who will be best cause the best insurance company for an age group doesn't exist.

So you better get hitting the phones and hope someone comes up with a good quote....

Haven't tried barclays - will try that!

I did tbh - i knew it would be around £2000, just wanted to know if thats normal. I would have though being over 21 would have counted for something!

My brothers insurance quote went down by about 600 quid once he hit 21. He did a quote a week before his 21st but didn't pick up the car on the day he'd planned so got requoted for the day after his 21st. It still amazes me that insurance companies consider you least of a risk being 21 years and 1 day old than being 20 years and 355 days old.

As already mentioned if you get a quote with Admiral/Elephant then add on someone older that has had their license donkeys years with umpteen NCB (e.g. a parent) and it should reduce the quote by quite a bit.

Much of the advice on this thread- I dont think NCB of the additional driver makes a difference and most insurers don't ask for it. The age and number of year will help though

Yes probably quite true, but IIRC they will ask if any drivers have had an accident in the last xx years, so not so much the amount of NCB they have, more the clean history I suppose.

Personally give your age / lack of NCD / i would say that quote is in the right ballpark, you might get it down to 1600 if you shop around hard, remember limit the miles on the policy (To what you expect to do) add another driver (Woman) might lower the quote.

I dunno, I was 22 when I insured the 307 for £950 with NUD. I had my license a similar amount of time also, and that was with 20k miles declared on the policy.

When i was 22 with 0NCD my clio was costing me £900 year with 0NCD and i'd had my licence for 3 - 4 years, its the luck of the draw, no-one liked me when i was 22 with 0NCD, i live in a good insurance area as well.

Actually, now I remember I used the fact that I had my provisional for about 4 years before getting my full license, and NUD allow you (or at least they used to) to use the total time you've had a license, including a provisional.

Give moneysupermarket a whirl. Excellent site.

Is a provisional licence even valid for 4 years?

(Ok I'd been driving longer than you)

D'oh, this is insurance, not a car thread.

Try Elephant, I insured the above with them for £1200.
