Just bought...

Both were making valid points though, unless you can argue them? :)
valid = helpful? :p

The latter one was helpful too, ring the garage you bought it from and ask them what to do next. Fairly simple. If they can't/don't want to help then speak to the DVLA.
As stated above, it's private.

The bird has faxed me the MOT certificate, Registration document and finance letter (confirming it's been paid off).

But now I don't know what to do.

Do I need to do a HPI check? If so how?
What about these RAC inspections?
Do I need a mechanic to look at it?

I'm sorry, I'm just stressing. I know absolutely nothing about cars and I need to get this sorted quick as a) I have no car, and b) I'm off on holiday in 4 days.

To be honest rather than rushing I would leave it until you come back from holiday, buying a car isn't something you want to rush into and then regret later.

True, I just want to get whatever checks sorted/organised for while I'm away on hols. That way, I can sort it when I get back.

She's got a deposit from me, agreeing to buy subject to these final checks being all clear.

HPI here:-

I guess you just have too book an RAC inspection or find the local Mit. garage in the area you are buying the car and call them to find out how much it would be to inspect.

PS See handy tip above about google ;)

I don't (didn't) know what a HPI check was or what it was for or whether I needed one on the basis she has a letter from Mitsubishi confirming it's been paid off. Hence the question.

Is it normal to get a private car inspected by a mechanic? Or am I being over paranoid?

Are there other things I should be asking for?

Thanks for your help. Please bear with my ignorance, I've never bought private and haven't bought a car for many years....

I'd certainly get a car checked over professionally if I didn't know anyone I trusted to do the checks. RAC would probably be the way I went with it.

I'd definitely HPI it too. For the peace of mind as well as avoiding a potential dog.

The service log book shows it's been regularly serviced at a Mitsubishi dealer. The woman bought it from a dealer and still has 6 months warranty on it which should be transferable. The MOT runs to September.

Do you still recommend a RAC/mechanic check?

Lets put it this way, you are buying a car privately, that means you are buying it "as seen"

So if you don't have the skill or knowledge necessary to "see" anything wrong with it you should either find someone who does or run the risk that you won't "see" something wrong and will then end up with a broken/stolen motor and out of pocket to the tune of £10K.

If I was buying a car of that value, particularly from a private individual I would definitely get it checked, yes... and no it isn't unusual to do so.

Mine came up with that when I bought my 328, took a few calls from the owner to sort it out as the information that they had paid up the loan hadn't filtered through.
Just speak to the seller and get her to sort it out.

So she's selling it after just six months? Doesn't seem very long.

She's just divorced and has bought a new house.

Sorted the finance issue with the garage that sold it to her. The previous owner had personal plates and the finance is against that.

Phew, that was a bit stressful.

Deffo getting an RAC check sorted.
