Just made a new "Canon Rock" recording, twin guitars (mp3)

Reserving post for judgement...

Half way through, sounds like a Dragonforce cover at the minute, which is goood. Gonna watch vid now too. Cor that ending was sexy :p

Video is also top!

Tonight that tune will be blasting through a 4k rig and I'm going to try to sell it :D .
That is absolutely bloody awesome and I wish I'd known you when I was younger.
I know the backing track is Jerry C's but your mixing skills are coming on leaps and bounds too.
11/10 - gobsmacked.

I just watched the vid so far... looked like yuo need to work on the sweep picking but other than that a good effort! a lot of the notes in the sweeps were missed but it's not too shabby I must say!

ok I've listened to the mp3 and I'm gonna be really harsh (mainly because Canon Rock has been done to death on the net and it has to be really good to impress me)...

First thing I notice are the volume swells in the intro, they just sound terrible, the notes are cut short and this sounds really amateurish (I'm not saying ** amateurish on guitar...) just that the intro doesn't start the whole thing off well...

Second, I like that you've played it harmonyed throughout the song - that's quite cool! Although I'd like to hear more adventurous harmonies used (not just minor 3rd... how about some 4ths? maybe a 5th or 2 :D just a bit more than minor 3rding the whole song lol..)

Thirdly... the sweeps need definate work as I noticed in the vid... the tricky sweep at the start has been fudged which is dissappointing! :S if you harmonised that I would have been impressed....

Overall it's not bad... i'm not mad keen on the guitar tone though - but I don't know your setup so I can't comment further on this...

Anyway sorry to be so negative but as I said Canon Rock has been done so it needs to be better than this I'm afraid!! :)

I Agree with the volume swells comment, I was gonna rerecord that track at the end but i couldnt be bothered by that time.

Harmony wise, only minor 3rds ever sound good, so i never bother doing anything else (unless im using 3rds and 5ths at the same time).

I changed the sweeps to taps in the mp3, because i couldnt be bothered to practice the sweeps up to standard. In the video i play them scruffy because I never got it up to standard before recording the video (I still cant do them)

Guitar tone is amazing for a v-amp2 so I disagree with you there, but thats down to opinion

Heres a sweep clip of some sweeps I can play though

hey man yeh I'm really sorry that I peed all over this thread... feel really guilty :( but I think most of what I said was true - I'll withdraw complaints of the guitar tone because you can't really tell from the vids... the mp3 it needs "beefed" up just a tad :) But yeh I know what you mean about that first sweep - it's a lil tricky but fine with enough practice ... i often muck that bit up too ... but I only started practicing Canon last week I guess lol... But yeh it's better than 90% of all the other ones out there though so kudos to you man! A little more practice would get it tip top!!

NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! nooo noooooo!!! nope! That's what Iron Maiden said in 1982 man lol... don't say that! 4ths are really bloody useful... gives a dark oriental MEAN sound to your song... Slayer's Reign in Blood is a great example - the main riff is harmonised to 4ths....

Also good is -3rd and -5th ;) but yeh... I'll HAVE to post some recordings now to back up my claims... gimme a coupla hours!

I don't have a webcam yet so I can't join the canon club lol but I'll get one soon...

I'll agree with the 3rds comment. You have to see harmonised lines for what they are - essentially chords. If you wouldn't fill your song with suspended 4ths, dont fill your melody with them :)

3rds, 5ths and the odd octave seem to work best.
