Just made a new "Canon Rock" recording, twin guitars (mp3)

I'll agree with the 3rds comment. You have to see harmonised lines for what they are - essentially chords. If you wouldn't fill your song with suspended 4ths, dont fill your melody with them :)

3rds, 5ths and the odd octave seem to work best.

Fine if you want to write a "By the book meat and potatoes song" - but who says you have to play by the rules? Certainly not in music! I like to see deviation... I might have a play see if it spices up the song any? :P

lol well define "loved" - I think it would give the song an edge that hasn't been done before... remember Canon Rock is well and truly necro'd all over the net... it needs something to kick it in the pants!

ok here's what I had time to do today:

Soundclick - Doc Canon Rock

It uses a varied combination of 3rds, 4ths, the odd 5th and also some simple counterpoint melody combined with my own backing drums and synths as I don't like the JerryC backing :D

I'm not sure what you are expecting but I think that gives it a little something with the subtle use of 4ths in there to keep it on edge! It stops just before the first sweep as (like I said before) I haven't bothered getting this learned to recording quality yet as I only grabbed the tab last week!

Here's how I recorded it:

Ibanez RG1570L (LED mod guitar :D)
-> Boss GT8
-> FX Return (Poweramp) of H&K Vortex 150W Half Stack
-> Shure SM56 slightly off axis, 1" off centre
-> Presonus Firebox Mic Preamp
-> Cubase
with Drums from Drums From Hell and all synths and bass from Hypersonic 2...

thank you chaps!
-Doc

-PS Should say, you don't need to signup to soundclick to stream the file (click Hi-Fi), you only need to signup to download it!

Hey DM, The main melody is played how it says in the tab, but is panned hard left....

The reason the rest comes centre is because I didn't make a harmony part for that - just wanted it sticking through on its on... all the other harmonised parts are hard panned with the original melody left side and my fannying about through the right side lol :)

Plus... who likes to stick to the main melody? hehe :) how do you like my 4ths heehee ? :D

It sounds ok but I still wouldn't have used them in mine though, don't like that sort of sound... i mean i use other harmonies when i want to sound "Out there"

listen to this:

Also the thing with my tone is that its suprisingly undigital sounding for a crap piece of plastic (v-amp2)...your boss GT-8 sounds really digital. I almost bought a GT-6, but ran out of money buying too many takeouts during christmas, so had to go with the v-amp 2 :)

Anyway, a lot of people try to be too original in their covers and it ends up making the song sound not as good, which is why I only use generic harmonies

I could hear some of the main melody in the left speaker but you obviously know your TAB and I know the original Pachelbels Canon and there are definitely wrong melodies in there. Perhaps that channel needs to be bought up more and the harmony bought down a tad. Still sounds good though.

To be honest I'm a bit of a bugger for trying to keep to the main melodys in songs we cover. My bass player keeps laughing that a couple of lines in Crazy Train I go up instead of down and I'm not following the melody. My Dad is 71 and he's recorded his 39th album (seriously) and he has a tendency of not following the main melodies and sometimes you can't work out what its supposed to be. Ask him to sing a song in f4ont of you and he nails it, ask him to record it and it goes all over the place. However, for 71 I hope I follow in his footsteps.

Wow! some really talented guitarist here :eek:

Loving that version as well, the 4ths work really well, although I like both versions equally. I'd give my right arm to play as well as you guys... oh wait! :p

lol man touche :P all it is is practice... you can do pretty much anything if you just practice it!

Neon, carp I didn't notice clippage lol was a quick mix as I've been quiet busy today but it's just so you get the picture about harmonyage :P If I was to ever do a proper Canon Rock it would go something along those lines... infact I'd probably depart from the original melody in many places anyway as when I cover things I don't usually like doing em note-for-note - i like to put my own little spin on things :)

yeh that could be done but then that would give the main emphasis on the orig melody and that's exactly what I didn't want to do... the counterpoint melody is as much a part of my cover as the original melody so they both are given equal space... if you see what I mean! If I didn't I might aswell just record the original version :P:P:P

I respect your decision but in 79 I learned a valuable lesson.
I was prostituting myself on a cruise ship in a showband and after one spot a punter asked me which version of Easy I was singing. The Commodores/Lionel Richie I replied but he said it sounded nothing like it. After the second spot he asked which version of My Life I was doing and I replied it was Billy Joels and he walked away shaking his head. It was about a month later when we got home and the first thing I did was to get the records of those two songs and my vocal melody's were absolutely nowhere near - I'd totally made them up and it took me ages to sing them the proper way. I went through the rest of the material and there were other changes or parts missing eg Listen To The Music by The Doobie Bros had a part completely missing. I made sure the band and I knew all our parts before we went back.
You can mess but you've got to keep it real.

Pfft - my stuff in the GW thread pwns all this ;)

*n (who can't play more than half a dozen notes in a row and has to sequence everything)

My uncle (Music fascist): That intro's out of tune!

Uncle: why did you use it then?
Me: I like it.
Uncle: Well...it does kind of fit...
