...well the MK5 GTi is now coming up to 100k and since having it from brand new it has been very good to me. However 7 years old, small niggles are appearing and I think this is as good a time as any to upgrade to something a little more powerful with 4 doors (thats a must). So in light of a previous post, I took some advice and made a phone call to BMW and Audi requesting a test drive in a M3 and a RS3. I know they are not in entirely the same league but with Audi not making a saloon RS4, the RS3 is the closest thing I can get with 4 doors that is not an estate.

First I turned up to BMW. I had to wait a short moment whilst he said bon voyage to his last appointment then he took my license and showed me the car. M3 Coupe 2011 - 9,900 miles, DCT, BMW Professional Nav, ECT. From the word go the car was awesome, so much grip, playful on round abouts, fantastic sound track, a total pleasure to drive. At the end of the test drive I knew I wanted one.

Next I turned up to Audi, about 200 yards down the A34 in Solihull. The RS3 with 4000 miles on the clock was waiting. He let me drive it off the forecourt - which I didn't think was allowed but there we go. RS3, DSG, Satnav. First impressions were the interior was nice, seats not as nice as the M3. The RS3 has huge amounts of grunt low down the rev range, but the real treat was the DSG. Much crisper, more seamless than the DCT. The 4WD was nice around corners too. I was impressed by how fast it felt, I wasn't expecting the 335 bhp to be as potent.

So now I am left with a difficult decision. As an everyday car I think the RS3 perhaps fits the bill slightly better. I can buy one brand new, drive it in the snow and fit loads of stuff in the boot if needed. So my brain says go for it, but my heart still think the M3 is more poised, more of a challenge to drive well, more fun. This is pretty much what every review says too.

The problem is finding a M3 E90 Saloon post LCI (2011) with DCT is like looking for a needle in a haystack. The search has begun...I just hope I can find one soon :)

as an audi fanboy, i'd go with the M3, i just love the shape, it's still pretty rare even though it's been out a few years, it's noticeable instantly compared to the RS3, yet at the same time, not glaringly obvious. Bulges in the right places etc. However, the 4wd would be nice in the snow, but then decent snow tyres would sort the M3 out during those cold winter months.

Just my opinion

Having driven neither - i would definitely go for the M3. It's an M3! One of the most recognisable and reputable badges a car can have on it.

get the RS3 and then remap it straight away. HELLO 400BHP!!!

I know there are ways to hide it but i certainly wouldnt want to put the three year warranty you get with a new one at any risk...seen as that is one of the main advantages of buying new.

the v8 seems great but the 5cyl is iconic.

biggest turn off for the audi is 4 wheel drive, but its not like the M3 isnt full of electrickery

is 400bhp practical day to day with 2wd? perhaps 400bhp and GayWD which you can deploy all the time is good.

decisions decisions!

Does the RS3 share an engine with the TTRS? I thought the TTRS was dulltastic.

The engine in the TTRS is the best aspect of the car. Sounds great, very fast with power everywhere and hugely tunable for little money. :)

A TTRS is pretty much R8 performance, remap it and they are faster than an R8 and the remap cost £400.

But yes in comparison to an R8 or M3 the TT RS is dull to drive, but it is quick, very grippy. :)

I assume the chip is loaded via the ODB and can be removed at any stage? This is the case with a lot of aftermarket chips or are Audi different. My ST was chipped and never was an issue when it went in. My dad had done this to his GTR too that would think would come under more scrutiny come service/warranty time. I assume the RS3 has a lot of movement in power without compromising the integrity and reliability of the engine. The only thing I would be wary of is the impact on the DSG gearbox setup.

Having had an E92 M3 before I would probably go for another, but I am seriously interested in the TTRS/RS3 at the moment; mainly because I like the practicality of the RS3, the engine and the 4WD grip. They are seriously rapid machines and point to point on a B road they are as quick if not quicker than an M3.

I've had the pleasure of going out in a TTRS with Revo remap and decat exhaust.

To say it was quick is an understatment, owners reckons it will keep with an R8 V10 easy, crazy performance and grip.

Get the M3 ;):p

I'd buy neither and would instead order an F30 335i which I'd imagine is similar money to a 2011 M3. It's no M3 but then neither is a 330bhp Audi A3 and you were considering one of those.. so...

If you want an M3 I'd be tempted to pay 5 figures less money and pick up a 2008ish one. As it's basically exactly the same car.
