above results are exactly why i wouldnt use BT

they sell you 20mbit and your lucky to get half in most cases.
At least with VM, you pay for a speed and get almost that speed.

cant really complain about 97mbit out of 100mbit, when i was on 50mbit before I used to get 48mbit

BT Infinity... they tried to sell me 40mbit fibre broadband, which is supposed to be a competing product to VM, but told me i could only recieve 20mbit

It's great that broadband in the UK can reach these speeds, but at the end of the day shouldn't VM be trying a bit harder to reach out to rural areas, rather than giving the large cities a boost from 50MBit to 100MBit?

They seem to just be taking the most profitable areas and offering them stupid speeds, where most villages are still struggling with 2MBit or less.

Just my $0.02 really.

Common sense business model?

Why would they want to reach out to areas where they would be operating at a loss?

Would need third party funding to expand their network... which isn't going to happen in a hurry!

Well how is it fair to just cut people off totally if they don't live in a city? Plus i'm not talking about taking a loss - i'm talking about branching out to those who they will still turn a profit from. Virgin are literally skimming the thickest cream off the top of the milk bottle and leaving BT and the others with the utter dregs.

It just seems.... retarded.... that some people are getting a 100MBit internet connection, whereas some are still on dialup.

That is not the fault of Virgin Media though.

If anybody is to blame it is BT.

BT was originally a public owned company, then it became privatised and still remains the biggest UK telco provider therefore they have the funding to roll out fibre.. hence infinity using their existing network with does reach almost everyone in the UK.

The problem is, they dont want to spend money... for years Virgin Media had this fibre network while BT sat on its backside sticking with copper lines.. and even now with infinity they are struggling to provide the speeds they quote.. they tried to sell me 40mbit, but told me id only get 20? why? its supposed to be a fibre network like VM. It was only when VM rolled out their 50mbit service a few years back while BT were still offering 20mbit over ADSL 2+ they thought to themselves... wait a minute, we need to do something fast... but even now they are a step behind, VM have released 100mbit, BT have responded with 80mbit in 2012, but VM are planning 200+ mbit for 2012.

Problem with VM is, it doesnt have anywhere near the funding BT has, or an existing network in rural areas it can upgrade like BT.

The company is already Billions in debt, paying off the debt it run up originally building the network in the first place.. they just dont have money to roll out to areas which are rural without bankrupting themselves.. they are rolling out though to more profitable areas though, but thats because they will get an adequate return on their investment to make it feasible.

This!

Although I think we will need to revisit the status of Internet Access as an essential rather than luxury. That said this may well all become moot when 4G rolls out - if even a fraction of its potential is fulfilled we may well see fast broadband across the whole country (anywhere that used to be able to receive terrestrial TV anyway!)

if you have a VIP package with VM, you may find 100mbit is cheapear :S

strange i know lol because their prices quote its more.. but when i upgraded i was told my bill would go down.

How would forcing them to roll out to non-profitable areas be fair on Virgin?

To run a business... unless you're a bank, it would seem... you need to be able to turn a profit or at least break even (on average).

If it costs them say £10,000,000 to roll out to a village where they'll receive maybe 1,000 customers max, each paying an average of £30/month... it would take them 333 months to re-coup their expendature before being able to turn a profit. Is nearly a 30 year turn-around for a tiny profit worth their investment? Of course not!

Whereas... increasing the capacity of an existing fibre network is relatively easy with relatively low investment... plus the massive increase in speed over competitors is something that's likely to pull people away from those competitors and sign up with Virgin (it worked with me, I used to be with Be then O2 on Be's network). Therefore, it's a much much better idea for Virgin to do what they are currently doing...

Yup... I went from ~£35/month for 50mbit to an average of barely over £20/month for 100mbit for the next 12 months :D

I got lucky with quidco / rententions bargaining :D

My 20mbit downloads at 2.35MBps reguarlly, which more than i expected, but happy with. :)

As for the cabling in rural areas, VM would do a feasibility study and weigh it up as crinkleshoes has said. They only put dedicated fibre into our business park because about 6 companies took up the MIA (managed internet access) services, 4mbit (10mbit bearer) leased line which costs £6,750pa, when previsouly all we could get was 512k adsl.
Seeing as they dug the trench for the fibre i had them chuck 2 x 10mbit cable modems in as well. That's the max they do for business with a static IP....weird...and retarded!!!
So we essentially upgraded from 512k adsl to 4mbit synchronous 1:1 MIA and 2 x 10mbit cable modems.
