Just upgraded to VM 100Meg

It's great that broadband in the UK can reach these speeds, but at the end of the day shouldn't VM be trying a bit harder to reach out to rural areas, rather than giving the large cities a boost from 50MBit to 100MBit?

They seem to just be taking the most profitable areas and offering them stupid speeds, where most villages are still struggling with 2MBit or less.

Just my $0.02 really.

Common sense business model?

Why would they want to reach out to areas where they would be operating at a loss?

Would need third party funding to expand their network... which isn't going to happen in a hurry!

Agree with Tute. There is a hugeeee fibre network running across the whole of North Wales for businesses etc, just ready and waiting to be spread out to homes. I emailed Virgin a while back asking them if they were going to take advantage of it and they said no... few months later and BT announce they're starting to sort of the exchanges to roll out their fibre optic service.

Virgin's loss I suppose.

The problem is, they dont want to spend money... for years Virgin Media had this fibre network while BT sat on its backside sticking with copper lines.. and even now with infinity they are struggling to provide the speeds they quote.. they tried to sell me 40mbit, but told me id only get 20? why? its supposed to be a fibre network like VM. It was only when VM rolled out their 50mbit service a few years back while BT were still offering 20mbit over ADSL 2+ they thought to themselves... wait a minute, we need to do something fast... but even now they are a step behind, VM have released 100mbit, BT have responded with 80mbit in 2012, but VM are planning 200+ mbit for 2012.

BT undersell their infinity connections. If you read about you'll find they qoute almost everyone at 20-25Mb/s and infact most get 37mbps+. I myself was qouted 17Mbps, enjoying 38Mbps currently though.

yer but you will probably have to wait 6months for the cash back from crap quidco.

Getting the cash back is better than not getting the cash back?

Anyhow... didn't do it that way, got discounts through retentions.

I was calling to cancel and then was going to create a new account at the new address to get the quidco cashback.

Guy in retentions asked why I was cancelling, I told him the truth... he proceeded to give me loads of discounts... :)

Not really... it would most likely be Virgin's loss if they did roll out to those areas... it's nowhere near as simple as you seem to think it is.

There's a much more simple solution... if you're so desperate for it, move house!

If there's a fiscally beneficial reason to do it, they will... they even accept requests for consideration & offers to offset the installation cost... you're welcome to take up the task of rolling out a small area for them... but I'm betting you wouldn't be too willing when you looked at the figures and realised how much of a loss you would be operating at...

They are not a government funded public service... they are a business and I'd expect them to continue to act like one

Where I used to live in Southampton... just off one of the main streets near the uni... practically everywhere around me except my no-through-road had Virgin Media services... yet I was ~20-30m away from the cabling.... now that was frustrating ;)

the thing is virgins predecessors C&W/Telewest/NTL nigh on bankrupted themselves with over-expansion of their networks, laying fibre is not at all cheap. harsh lessons have been learned and your not likely to see them expanding their networks in any great way for the forseeable future.

I phoned up to upgrade to 100Mb the other day as it's been out in my area since May.

I currently pay £28.50 a month for 30Mb which is just fine, I use Vonage for landline so no need for a phone service and have SkyHD for TV among other digital/hd STBs for global TV so no need for VM's TV service either. I have a modem only solution after requesting it from the CEO office, it rapes the SuperChub and eats it for breakfast.

I asked how much the 100Mb would cost........£45 she said...

I mentioned I had been a VM Cable BB user since the very first cable rolled out at 150K but nothing I said could drop the price because the computer said £45.

What happened to the time when the person on the other end of the phone had the power to negotiate?

Sad Panda.

That is not the fault of Virgin Media though.

If anybody is to blame it is BT.

Most of it is actually down to the people who live there. Going way back when Virgin Media used to be NTL, when NTL used to be telewest and Cable and Wireless, back when cable and wireless used to be Nynex.... when they first started to lay cables, people were up in arms at the amount of roadworks, claiming they were damaging the paths, roads, gardens and tree roots. They were taken to court in a number of areas and eventually the rest of the roll out of the fiber network was pretty much canned by the council officals.
So really, its its actually the people who live/d in those areas that are the blame for it some 15-20 (or more) year back. :p

Its only recently that virgin media have even been allowed to apply to lay cables in areas where they are close to existing green cabled areas or install it in new builds, but there has to be enough people in the street for them to present the application to dig the street up to the council.

above results are exactly why i wouldnt use BT

they sell you 20mbit and your lucky to get half in most cases.
At least with VM, you pay for a speed and get almost that speed.

cant really complain about 97mbit out of 100mbit, when i was on 50mbit before I used to get 48mbit

BT Infinity... they tried to sell me 40mbit fibre broadband, which is supposed to be a competing product to VM, but told me i could only recieve 20mbit

those crappy BT connections hey, ill raise you my upload ;)

Well i have just in the last hour placed on online order for 100meg and got next friday for install date.. asked for a call back so i could go over the order and make sure it all ok. The woman who phoned then went on to scrap the online order and do it over the phone for same package and prices but with a £100 credit to my account and a install date for this sunday!!! :D

I just want a decent uplaod speed please.. I'm sticking with my ADSL 2+ (15 Down/1 Up) until i can get 20mb+ upload from someone (at a reasonable cost).

20mb upload?! Don't hold your breath matey.

It will cost you a small fortune.
Annex-M is the nearest thing a consumer can get, but you'd need mahoosive download speeds to sacrifice for better upload speed.

Incidentally, today i've been getting quotes from VM about our business options.
20mb on a 100Mb bearer - £10,500 pa
This is synchronous and uncontended though.

Exactly..
Though you see these sort of speeds quite often in other countries e.g. Asia and US.

Couldn't give a damn about download speeds so long as they're above 20mb, but i would actually like to send data the otherway you know.

Yeah u hear ya buddy. Sadly we are woefully behind a lot of the other countries.
I remember when i cousins wife came over from Nebraska in 1994, she was saying that all the new build houses had cable connections for broadband.

100meg coming to my area in 3 weeks. I'm on 50mb atm which is pretty good but am tempted for the extra £10 to get double my speeds as well :D.
