Just what is NVIDIA up to?

12GB is probably ok for 1440p for a little while. But was, they should have fitted 16GB.
Even 16gb for some new releases on Unreal 5 at 1440p is purported to be not sufficient. Eg Immortals of Aveum which is an early UR5 game.

Ideally 20gb is future proofed for poor console ports. PC specific game development is dying as it just isn’t profitable to cut consoles out. So consoles first then PC is how the future plays out meaning more vram is necessary.

Same reason why Apple is charging $200 for extra 8GB. Because they can.
Basically don’t rely on any company to do you a favour. Buy what you need and what you can afford and don’t think about the ethics/profit strategy of any company. There is only a duopoly therefore no competition to drive prices down.

Lower end cards should start with 12GB minimum and not be stupid pricing, and the rest of the cards shouldn't be stupid pricing either. Not much you can do so either pay up or wait and see if it improves and if they pull the same rubbish again for the next cards, surprised nobody has had the guts to boo Jensen on stage yet.

It's not like the extra vram is expensive, its what $23 per 8GB for the microchips, so why nvidia are charging $100 more for the 16GB 4060 Ti is beyond me.
$23 is the spot price, I'd imagine Nvidia is paying considerably less for their bulk contracted orders.

They are supposedly using a clamshell configuration for the ram so there's probably a bit of extra design going into the PCB. Having said that i can't see it being $50+ worth of redesign and extra traces.

Plus they really only had to use a clamshell design because of the gimped 128bit bus.

I'm still baffled by the way NVIDIA is behaving. With the disastrous launch of the 4080, the un-launch of the 4080 12GB, you would think they would learn their lesson, but subsequent products clearly says not. This is the worst series, by far.

So what on earth are they up to? Surely this can't be a blunder. One bad card is a blunder, a whole range is a plan?
Its very simple really they are doing everything they can to protect their margins and increase profits to the max testing the limits of the market.

Nvidia are not a customer or consumer friendly organisation, they employ PR and marketing to present a positive picture but in reality they would build and sell every bit of silicon to a cloud provider if they could.... until they fall out with them ;)

Watch The Elon Musk Show, iPlayer, its very interesting, the man is both a genus and a donk, whatever else people may think of him, the world needs people like him and they are extremely rare.
Bit off topic but Elon has previously come across as a fantastic builder of teams and motivator. I wouldn't mind him as my chief engineer, but I recon I've worked for better chiefs; On the technical side of the fence he comes across as OK, a good enabler, but overstates his understanding. Recently he comes across as going mad with sleep deprivation, but he can't see how badly it effects him. It's kind of hilarious to watch him **** his own **** up, and instead of taking a break, he keeps pushing harder. Lmao.

NVIDIA don't care about Gaming Right now & it shows in their Finances Profit share & launches

Gaming GPU's give them less < 15% of their profit where as A.I, Automotive, Servers is rest
:(
Your point is totally valid, but there is another interpretation of the same data.

Their gaming GPU segment will keep giving them only 15% unless they're willing to expand the market by reducing prices. Obviously this relies on the assumption that you can maintain good gross margin selling at lower prices, but Apple and others have made this work.

I also think that your point was more valid when cutting edge nodes were fully booked, but that is absolutely not the case at the moment. There is semi-conductor supply available, NV have just decided that they want high margin @ low volumes.

That's all good until someone comes into the market HUNGRY. I'm looking at you, Intel...

He never stops and is always full tilt, he expects the same from those who work with him, if one can hack it one can achieve great things with him, as he and those around him have.

Recently he comes across as going mad with sleep deprivation,

Yes and you might be more on the money with that that perhaps you intended.

I like him, he stands for the right things, mostly, for now, by that i mean.... i agree with a lot of his reasoning's for talking over Twitter, having said that i just hope he doesn't go off the deep end and come over all Kanye West.

And his ambitions are right, we do need a hard evolutionary push, he is doing that.

Watch this from start to end, reusable engines, if you know what that means you will appreciate the monumental complexity of what is going on here, astonishing.
