The value of the car should obviously alter the premium. I dont know what kind of logic these companies use these days.

the only question about the value of a car that I have been asked, on the phone or online, has been 'is it worth over £40k?' Until I get my 6 numbers the answer will always be ''no'' :)

They must just hate me then:

2003 BMW 530i Sport Value £18000: £813
2000 BMW 530i Sport Value £6000: £813

1996 Mk2 Mondeo 2.0 Ghia X Value £400: £650
2001 Mk2 Mondeo 2.0 Ghia X Value £3500: £650

1999 Omega 2.5 CD (170bhp, IG 16?) £600
2006 A6 2.0 TDI (140bhp, IG 14), £1800

Tried with a number of different insurers too. Damned insurance lottery :(. I would have assumed it's because even a minor dent can cost thousands rather than, in the case of the Omega, the total loss value is the most they can lose *however* that doesn't explain why you can insure the 530i so cheaply?

Nope but I am not complaining. I ran a quote through for a UK Subaru Impreza Turbo 2000 the other day and it was £1900. Staggering. Even if I declare modifications on the 530i including 250bhp remap, exhuast and induction, its still only 913 quid.

heh, i would hate to pay over £500 for insurance now :) Hopefulyl next year when I get an elise it wont be outrageous. Problem with cars is you got to be prepared to fork out for them.

I'm getting some great quotes by using my new house in Aber. £1100 - £1300 for anything from DC2 Tegs to Audi TTs to Impreza Turbos and even a 530i, not that i'd ever consider one but it's nice to know insurance companies are starting to give me some options ;) That's based on 20 years old with 3 years NCB.

Who will quote you on an Impreza Turbo?

I find Elephant are best for everything.. except the Impreza which was literally more than double the price of the 530i.

From another thread:

'Screentrade' were the other insurers. I did a quote on their site and they appear to be brokers for other companies, they managed to get me a quote of £1291.89 through 'Zenith Services UK Ltd'. FC with a £250 excess.

That was with my old postcode too, might run a quote with my new one a bit later if i have time.

I got a quote next year for my GTI-6, i honestly dont know how i do it. Adding my mum halfs it. With elephant next year, 1 ncb, almost 22, 8k miles a year, social only - £383 TPFT

You should always add a female relative/female partner to the insurance as it will lower the quote, the logic behind this is:

Young male = high risk >only driver means high risk 100% of the time

+

Woman = low risk > they assume that the high risk driver will only be driving say abuot 60% of the time and the low risk driver the other 40%

= Lower premium.

Fox, try adding your mum to your BMW quote and see if it lowers it!

No logic at all for us at the receiving end but for them it means they don't have to pay out as much for basically the same car in a smash. Insurance is legalised theft and they are very clever at it.

Have you noticed the thing called Max Driver? IAM and Max Power mag have gone together to try to get younger people to do IAM. Now what this has meant is that they now have a deal with Adrian Flux to get 25% off your insurance quotes. It's the same course as the IAM so I don't see why they couldn't do 25% for IAM members, I already know that they are willing to do it for people.

I have also recently found a website called http://www.advanced-driving.co.uk , now on there it has all sort of information about getting money off your insurance with IAM. One tip it says is that you should never mention you have IAM until you have a quote, otherwise they might not take the discount off.

I then did a google search and found this article on the BBC website which says all about the Max Driving and then on extra interesting bit of info. It says if you sign up to advanced-driving website (free to do so) you get an extra 15% off. My guess is they really are trying to raise the awareness of IAM/RoSPA.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/actionnetwork/G1725

Could be worth finding out more from Adrian Flux with this. Say like if they quote you £2k on a Scooby, could make it £1.2k which isn't that bad for insurance.

They also mentioned that Footman-James, The AA, Elephant.co.uk and Diamond.co.uk do discount for IAM. Though I suppose you have to ring those ones up directly to get any discount.

Just had my first under £200 quote for Fully Comp Insurance. Its for the car I hope to buy tomorrow,2003 Nissan Primera 1.8SVE. Strangley Direct Line were the cheapest, Elephant and Admiral were well off.

I tried different years and values and it made no difference.
