Kaveri APU Architecture Detailed

Do you not remember AM3+ :p?

I was waiting for you to come running in with that, its getting a bit worn out. just because there was a delay between AM3+ and Bulldozer is not to say because of that: its the norm...., there have been plenty of other platform launches since then with no delays, using AM3+ as a constant fullback position is getting a bit silly, IMO.

I don't recall where I've been using AM3+ launch weirdness before for platform delays.
Calm yourself, it's a joke.

And actually, if I remember correctly, FM2's launch was a little funky too, albeit only a week or so.

EDIT : I've just checked, I was indeed correct. the CPU's came out before the boards did with Trinity/FM2, so you could own a CPU, but only look at it for a week.

We're approaching Q4 which is what Kaveri is touted at, so it'll be in the next 3-5 months.

I've read that the boards are expected to be available more or less immediately after Kaveri is officially launched.

The Asus rep on bit-tech said that they're not planning any FM2+ ITX boards at all, which is weird.

Hopefully they go back to a launch like 890FX, where both the CPU's launching with it and the boards were in plentiful supply on the same day.

That's the last launch AMD's done as far as I'm aware that's been all fine.

Excluding maybe FM1 Llano, but the stock was shocking.

The ITX thing is a bit of a downer, a Kaveri ITX could be very nice.

MSI and ASRock have FM2 ITX boards, so I suspect they'll do the same with FM2+. Gigabyte, none announced yet I think.

Kaveri ITX systems will make good Steam box setups for lower end gaming.

Wouldn't touch Asrock.

And the only stuff I've ever had break personally is MSI stuff :p

And I've suggested a few Trinity Pre-Builts to people for gaming, if Kaveri is priced well, it'll make some excellent pre-builts.

The official Steam box isn't far off now, it is supposed to compete with next gen consoles though so the hardware is hard to guess. I think we'll see a lot of cheap Kaveri boxes with Steam's OS supplied though, and since there's no OS cost they could be selling for £199.

Valve's kept very quiet about it and the media's lost interest without any further info to report. I'd be surprised if it's an APU. Nvidia graphics would make more sense too, unless AMD's holding back on significantly better Linux drivers.

Valve's porting all their titles, and CryEngine has been ported so I'm guessing we'll see at the very least Crysis 3. Most indie games are fine already. It'll probably be a case of buying into a platform with good support for new games going forward - Valve wouldn't bother with this if they didn't have deals with the major game studios. Developers have said it's not normally very hard to port existing games, barely anything if they're OpenGL already.

I know. They're likely to get a handful of existing titles, but they'll have lined up deals with the studios so that newly launched PC/console games are also available on the Steambox. I suppose people will dual boot with Windows to play games that aren't ported.

On my Steam library under Linux at the moment I think I only have Portal, Half Life, TF2 and Trine 2, aside from Humble Bundle indie games I've paid for.

I hope not, seeing as how Kaveri has been delayed until 2014; since FM2+ is backwardly compatible with both Trinity and Richland I see no reason not to release it as soon as possible.

AMD denied that it'd been delayed from what I recall.

They denied that it'd been delayed because they claim that it was never intended for a 2013 release, despite releasing statements to the contrary last year; regardless, Kaveri is scheduled for a 2014 release (delayed or "on time", depending on which AMD statements you choose to believe).

Oh I hope it's not a 2014 release.
I'd ALWAYS been sceptical of them making 2013, ALWAYS, but I let myself get swayed and swooped into the 2013 Q4 hype.

I'm HOPING for my own sanity that it's 2013 Q4.
