Makes the rioters in some other countries look rather tame in comparison!

Main government building stormed:

...and set on fire!

the internet has been shut down for the whole country:

some police siding with the protestors:

some more footage of the protests:

This sort of thing is why Putin is paranoid about Ukraine.

Also, apparently some of this is related to big crypto farms causing rolling blackouts during winter, when temps can easily reach -20C. Since China banned crypto mining, a number of very large mining firms headed to Kazakhstan, where they were at first welcomed by the government.

Since then they've apparently strained Kazakh infrastructure beyond breaking point.

Used to live there back in 2011/12. Not surprised it escalated to this because there were protests against Nazarbayev back then. very split opinion between the people; some people love him and elevate him to a demigod status, and the rest of them, mostly working class despise him.

we need to import more migrants to show us the way :)
Get rid of our corrupt government and political elite.

one day it'll happen, police won't be on our side though they aren't with the people here

Got to think this will get very messy if they don't quieten down with the arrival of Russian troops.

Thing is it's a well-armed population and a very sparsely populated county (like the size of Western Europe but the population is like < 20 million) - could be a serious headache for Russia if it dragged on.

Kazakh army only has 20,000 troops and we've already seen police forces just give up or switch to supporting protestors within 24 hours. This started as a fuel protest but with regimes like this there are always going to be a bunch of underlying grievances and I guess the fule protest was the spark they needed.

I wonder how isolated this may be or whether it has the potential for a new "Arab Spring" type series of events in other outlying areas should the current "peoples revolution" succeed in Kazakhstan?

I was wondering. Perhaps just in time to divert Russian forces.. #tinfoilhat
