Got up this morning to find my PC had restarted itself etc after a Microsoft update. Running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit version with IE11.

Then realised Internet Explorer wasn't happy - would just open the window and then shut down again straight away :( Played about googling through Chrome for a while and trying to reset Internet Explorer to defaults but this wouldn't work properly either, and IE still wouldn't work. Ran several suggested Adware and malware programs with nothing detected.

Eventually found this

Found kb2957689 in the update history, uninstalled and restarted PC and we're back in business with IE apart from having to go in and change search providers and get the screen back how I had it before

This is why I don't have automatic updates switched on. I'll let Windows inform me of latest updates but I always run the kB number through Google first to look for any potential issues being reported by other users. Pedantic and a tad anal? Maybe.

@ OP, since you never got any real help from 1st 2 peeps I have that KB installed and have zero issues.

Offtopic like the 2 above, FF is out of fashion and slow now FYI.

You'll always find somebody complaining about that or some other problem when you go looking. Search results never come back, yo boss, this release was pimp! Install away homie! ¬¬

This, no help. But all running fine.

And loo at going searching every single update will have issues with a minority group for one reason or another. You can't have updated windows ever.

Use a different browser until you find a fix.

There's something more going on with your system.

- Try running sfc/scannow from a command prompt window.
- Download and run the system readiness update.
- Disable or remove any plugins/extensions or anything that may monitor your system (AV/Malware software)
