You will find that the majority of Take-away shops that sell fish & chips use frozen fish whilst a proper chippy should only be selling fresh fish that's cut and prepared that day.

See round here thats wrong, the vast majority of places do sell PROPER fish and chips, and still offer kebabs as an alternative. Almost as a token gesture if you will.

I agree that fish and chips from places that sell burgers, pizzas or whatever else are almost always rank though.

Okay I'll join this thread now and I can say I do know what I'm talking about when it comes to Fish & Chip shops, the best shops DON'T sell kebabs or burgers, normally when shops start offering a huge range of food the quality comes down.

Totally agree with the fresh fish.

The best one ive used is Angelo's in Derby on Wood Road, consistently good and they use fresh fish from Grimsby every day.

Again, they sell kebabs :D

The way a chippy differs between each other is in the above, the batter recipe and the oil they use, not whether they sell kebabs.

Back on topic, i really couldnt give a stuff what they stick in a kebab - im sure people wouldnt eat frozen burgers/chicken products from supermarkets if they knew what actually went into making them - but we still do!

As long as it tastes good them i'm up for it ;)

Nismo, you had the fish and chips from the one on Chesterfield Road next to the post office??

Absolutely pap!

I think the only one i used in Mansfield that was any good was the one opposite the Pub on the X roads (A38) going into town leading towards the bus station. Next door to the tanning salon.

The thing i hate about donner meat is the lack of care it needs, bang it on, heat up the panels and done.

You dont know how long the meat has been cooking, if its been there for day. Thats only the preperation and cooking which is very important, then you have what the hell is it made off.

I always get a chicken kebab, they get the chicken from the English butchers acorss the road.

If i want chips i go to the English Chippy, if i want a Kebab i go to the turkish takeaway.

This reminds me of primary school when thee "older" kids used to go round at lunch time telling the kids eating their sausages etc how they were made. It didn't bother me in the slightest then and it doesn't now, if it bothers you how something then don't think about anything else like how the animals are killed or live their lives or you will starve to death :o

Its like anything, you can get pure angus beef burgers and you can get reformed beef burgers.

If you go to the right butchers you can get the best sausages in the world.

Funnily enough I prefer the taste of normal sausages over the taste of pure choice meat sausages :/

I'll agree with you on that one.

Its funny what we get used to, then when you eat the pure meat version of it then it just doesnt taste right.

You cant beat a good Linclnshire sausage

Like an earlier poster I saw a TV program recently on what goes into the Doner skewers, and it wasn't that bad. As for dog food being better for you than a kebab, I suspect that dog food is probably better for you than most takeaway food.

I'm pretty much with Gilly in this discussion.

A chippy doesn't sell Kebabs, a takeaway does and if it tastes good and doesn't do you serious harm, it doesn't matter how it's made - just eat it.

He's right when he says that Northern chippies are better, as well. I live 4 doors away from "Zanre's" chippy in Peterhead which won the best in Britain award in 1999 and the "Happy Haddock" back home in Shetland is probably the best I've ever visited.

I have to disagree about the sausages though. I do prefer the quality meat ones, although I will quite happily eat the sawdusty ones.

Stan :)

Best fish and chips ever = POSH FISH OXFORD

No, you're wrong. The Magpie in Whitby is the best ever, in fact any chippy in whitby is tremendous.

I can't read this thread after the first page because I LOVE Kebabs.

We're still on the 1st page  ;)

Just to clarify, battered burgers are OK from a chippy, but not burgers in a sesame seed bun, those are for pizza shops etc :)

The one opposite the college or are we talking further up CR towards Pleasley where you used to live? If so yeah its pap, but I think they have new owners now.

The one on the A38 opposite the pub is the Barracuda, pretty good but there are others just out of town which are better. My local one is very nice.

The one towards Pleasley - near the VW garage....total pap!

Thats the one - Barracuda, they were the best out of the ones near me.

Well, now we're back in Derby - we use the Crest of the Wave which has won regional awards left right and centre for years now.

Absolutely superb!

Off topic slightly Nismo,

If you want the best chinese i've ever tasted - go to Wok Wonder on Chesterfield Road.

OMG it's superb, i even took a trip to Mansfield to go get one for me and the wife because the ones round me now just don't compare.

Meal for 2=droooooooool
