We've had our lab for just over three months now since getting him when he was 2 months old. He lives in our porch in between the kitchen and downstairs toilet. It's a pretty small porch and he's growing bigger everyday.
We've just got him a big sized bed and with that in there there's not that much room for him to move around.

So I've been thinking about moving him outside, during the day anyway. We have a rectangular space in our exterior building that is ideal for a kennel to fit in there, the dog would then have the whole garden to do what he pleases.

Who keeps their dogs outside? I'd probably bring him in at night. I'm not thinking of doing this until he's fully grown anyway.

What do you guys think?

Andy

Is it not possible to have him as an inside dog, with the run of the house? Dogs can be trained to behave very well, such as not go upstairs, on sofas, etc.

The only dogs I know that live outside are proper working dogs, police and farm; otherwise inside.

It is ok to keep 'em outside so long as the kennel is large enough and warm enough etc though why you have a dog as a pet and then keep it outside does baffle me.

I'm doing it for the dog not for me. The GF and I are out at work during the day so it doesn't really matter if the dog is in or out. The dog will always be a pet I just thought he'd appreciate having more room to mess about.

It should be fine, I know plenty of people who keep both working dogs and pet dogs outside.

I’m sure the dog would much prefer to run around outside rather than be cooped up in the house while you are out. Just be careful it doesn’t get stolen.

If your working full time and the dog will be alone all day then maybe you should have thought twice about getting a dog.

Bloody hell, I'd love to see all the people who have pets and don't work!! Get a grip.

My family have always brought up dogs and they've worked full time, I work 5 minutes from my house too so pop back when I can.

Bring him in when you get home, fuss him etc.

Small shed outside with all his stuff in, toys, blankets, what not.

Garden needs to 101% escape proof. Dogs dig, so make sure he cant dig under a fence.

You'll be amazed how much trouble he can get up to when you are not there ;)

Richie.

Oh I know mate, skirting boards are all gone :p

We'd always planned to move him into the kitchen when he was bigger but he may enjoy being outside more, he usually can't wait to get out.

Can you get a dog flap, so that he can let himself in and out during the day?

A flap for a full sized lab when he gets older? Might as well get some of them swing doors like the ones that bars have in old western films:D
or do they actually make things like this? I imagine they wouldn't be very good as i reckon i could squeeze through a gap big enough for a full grown lab..

He's going to be a BIG lab. I think the local chavs would get in my house :p

Look at them paws!

nice name:)
kinda makes me wonna run out and get myself a pet. You think the uni would mind if i had a dog running my halls? :D

on topic - I don't know anyone that keeps their dog or any other pet outside myself but i cant see them harm in it as long as he cant break out of the garden. What about the neighbors though, Do they have any cats or dogs or is there anything around that might set him off barking a lot? Saying that it just reminded me that the people over the road from where i live back home keep there dogs outside and they have had so many complaints about barking that they are thinking of re homing them

Yes you can, and they have a magnetic thing on so that it only opens for your dog.
And they do make them big enough for large dogs too.

I still don't think i'd trust that much. Can't be that hard to break into, i mean the magnetic door locks on one the private halls at my uni is easy enough to get in by giving it a good hard yank

When we lived in Cyprus our neighbours had hunting dogs which lived outside (as all dogs in Cyprus do ) their kennel's were just outside our bedroom windows, the barking drove me crazy.
