Keeping dogs

Oh I know mate, skirting boards are all gone :p

We'd always planned to move him into the kitchen when he was bigger but he may enjoy being outside more, he usually can't wait to get out.

Need to keep him occupied and give him stuff to do. A bored dog will start to eat your kitchen :)

Richie.

We have a 5 year old black lab and he has full roam of the house.

He sleeps in my parents room lol.

He's even allowed on the sofas!

We've had our lab for just over three months now since getting him when he was 2 months old. He lives in our porch in between the kitchen and downstairs toilet. It's a pretty small porch and he's growing bigger everyday.
We've just got him a big sized bed and with that in there there's not that much room for him to move around.

So I've been thinking about moving him outside, during the day anyway. We have a rectangular space in our exterior building that is ideal for a kennel to fit in there, the dog would then have the whole garden to do what he pleases.

Who keeps their dogs outside? I'd probably bring him in at night. I'm not thinking of doing this until he's fully grown anyway.

What do you guys think?

Andy

I think you've not done your homework on the breed of dog you have, and would be a total retard 'moving' him outside.

Why do you have him in the first place?

How the **** do you mean, you keep him in your toilet?

He is not a 'working breed' dog, as such anyway. So I would advise against it. Also he will smell, role in his **** and **** and your house will smell as a result (if you let him back in).

. pfft owners. :(.

No swearing - Gilly

Oh clam down dear... Christ.

If you read my post before having a hissy, I clearly write he's in a porch between THE KITCHEN AND THE DOWNSTAIRS TOILET, are you implying my toilet is in my kitchen??

He's well trained to go to the toilet in the garden, I'd fully expect him to do the same and when he was to be in the house (night time) as he is now.

My family have always had Alsations that had the option to go outside into a run if they wish and they loved it, they are alos loving pets. Not working dogs.

If he's use to being inside i think you will find it very hard to move him outside. If your going to do it you need to do it as soon as possible.

When you say he "lives" in the porch bit, do you mean he does not have time with you in the house or do you mean that is where he sleeps?

I would be very worried if your pup spends all day alone in there.

Labs are highly sociable animals and suffer greatly from isolation. The Kennel Club state that an adult dog should be left for a maximum of four hours a day - and a puppy even less.

If your lab puppy does not have LOTS of human contact you risk disobedience, lack of 'bite inhibition' and general unfriendliness / wareness of humans.

Depending on your area there is the risk of dog theft from the garden. It is a massive problem around here. Make sure your dog is chipped and tattooed.

I personally feel you should not put any dog outside for long periods unsupervised - unless you consider getting a proper kennel and run attached.

If i knew where you lived, i'd report you. Its disgusting to keep a dog outside, especially when there pet dogs.

Either take him to the RSPCA shelter, local dog sanctuary, or learn how to look after it.

You shouldn't buy a dog if your out of the house all day and then come on here and moan.

Please report me then, I'll be happy to tell RSPCA how I treat my dog. Would you like my contact details? Email in trust?

If your that thick not to be able to read my post properly don't bother replying.

Let me get the points down again...

- Sully is a very happy puppy that gets more than enough attention throughout the day. Mostly 8am, 12 o'clock, then at 5pm. More than a few occasions I come between these times due.
- Sully would not of lived outside, he would have gone outside whilst we are at work so he has a lot more freedom. He would have had a kennel to go into and toys to play with.
- Sully would come inside once we are home like any other pet.

Would you like me to elaborate on anything else?

What happened if it started to rain, hard, then got cold really quick?

What about if someone came and just stole him? Happens more then you think.

Your dog will soon start to learn that you leaving the house = dumped outside.

He'll start to resent you and start having behavioural issues.

He'll smell and be muddy, would you bring him inside if he's all muddy on your lovely carpet?

Dogs legally are not meant to be left alone for longer then 4 hours, so the RSPCA would probably like to talk to you about that.

How is it disgusting to keep a dog outside? I know plenty of people who do; they have proper kennels, and garden to run around in and get brought in from time to time.

Then why get a dog if you keep it outside? Why not a cat or a statue?

See, your PRESUMING, do you have a clue what my house is like, or the garden? No.

If it was bad weather in the morning, he'd be kept inside, if it started raining, I'd go home and let him in, if he was filthy and muddy (for reasons unknown??) I'd clean him and bring him into his normal room which has laminate flooring so unless my lovely clean carpets can get dirty from there? I'm not sure...

Like I said, Invite them round :)
