Kerbal Space Program

I have to admit I've been getting a bit hacked off with the patcher. I've been trying to update all day, and only when it has spent hours downloading the update does it come up with an error that says "no", and erasing all progress it had made. It also corrupted the version I already had installed so I can't play that either.

Has anyone been able to update their version through the patcher? Or has everyone been torrenting it?

Edit: just been told by one of the devs that they're going to stop using the patcher and are working on a new one which will hopefully work as advertised. In the meantime, they've made it available as a direct download.

Worked fine first time for me. Pot luck I guess.

I'm on the fence with the RCS changes. As long as I leave plenty of time I can still get things slowly manoeuvred, but it makes things more awkward and fiddly without actually improving the game I think.

This is true.
A newer patcher will go into Development in January.
I have known for a Month or so, but as a Test Team member, am bound by an NDA.

As for Torrenting or updating KSP.
Always download the latest patcher to a New folder, an install from there.
Never waste your time updating an older build, it rarely works.

A fresh folder, latest patcher, an fresh install every build, has always worked every build for me. An as a Tester, we get new builds every 1-2 days.
I am really liking 0.18.2 ( As long as I close my eyes to the unfixed bugs), an been loving revisiting many of the planets, moons.
Really excited for 0.19, some time in Fed/Mar. :D

Well, like marc1024 up there, I did try getting the latest patcher and installing from there, but it refused to work. It's much better now that you can just download a zip file from your profile page which contains all the game files.

But it's properly installed now. I've already sent a long range probe to have a look at this new trans-joolian object:

Not the best shot; I think it would have been better to take a picture from further away, but oh well. You can still see fault lines which seem to indicate cryo tectonics like Europa. A couple of craters dotted around, but overall quite a smooth surface. Orbital velocity seems to be similar to that of the Mun, so it shouldn't be very hard to get a lander on it.

Out of curiosity, what kind of stage did you have for the interplanetary burn? I'm putting together a test carrier and lander for the Jool bodies but I'm not sure exactly what I need.

Launch stage: 7 mainsail engines in asparagus configuration, each drawing from one orange fuel tank.
Interplanetary transfer stage: 1 nuclear engine drawing from one of those tall thin fuel tanks.
Orbital insertion stage: 1 ion engine drawing from two xenon tanks.

For the transfer and orbital insertion stages, I always had a little bit of fuel left from the previous stage, which was useful.

I have set myself a goal. Get to laythe and start a colony. So i am going to drop loads off landers + ships on the planet :)

Hopefully it will be possible with this craft here

Thanks for that. At the moment I've got a full orange tank in orbit with nuclear engines and figured that'd be plenty for there and back carrying a lander and a couple of probes with it. I need to figure out exactly where I'm going though so I can tailor the lander for it.

Did you deburn the interplanetary stage or is it still floating out there?

The interplanetary stage was still on Eeloo escape velocity when it ran out of fuel, so yeah it's still floating out there.

An orange tank fuelling a nuclear engine should indeed be enough to get to Eeloo and back if it's already in orbit around Kerbin. I assume you're doing an Eeloo orbit rendez-vous then if you're planning to land?

Scott Manley has done a video on this:

That's the ultimate goal, though to be honest I probably need to practice my interplanetary manoeuvres a bit first. I'm too used to high-power, low efficiency burns.

I've got to say though, I don't like the MET Manley had there, that's an awful long time in a titchy cabin with your Kerbal buddies!

enjoying this but Kaspersky doing my head in - kept detecting problems with the .exes

kept putting them in quarrantine

so set up the whole Kerbal directory as an exclusion

so booted up PC today to find all exes vanished from Kerbal directory again ! not in Kaspersky quarrantine either ?? baffled

This is currently 25% off so I thought I would treat myself to a more updated version to the old old old old demo I used to have!

Any advice???

Hello an Welcome vanquish storm.

What advice do you need?
The changes in the latest build (0.18.2) is astronomical over the old Demo build.
There is an entire Solar system: Planets, Gas Giant, Moons, Dwarf Planet, Rocks.
As well as complete system overhaul, Persistance (Save your mission Progress), Resource system, EVA/IVA, Docking.
Not to mention, even better Rocket effects + 100% more explosions.

I'd recommend starting with the different Tutorials (If its been a while), as it explains nearly all the new flight/navigational systems.

Apart from those, dig in to either the Planes or Rockets, an if you get stuck, need inspiration, just ask here.
Also dont forget to introduce yourself on the official forums. :)

That has to be Duna, where you've landed in a polar region. Can I has virtual high five? Nice shots.

/highfive

Yeah it's Duna :) I planned to get right on the top but fell short :( It is like half way between the top and where the ice ends. Perfect place tbh because the moon never goes away!

Bob legging it from a stranded capsule to the rescue vehicle. I tried a 3-man landing on Duna which went badly wrong, and instead of just ending the flight decided to launch a rescue mission. I now completely understand why people use MechJeb for landings: plonking a ship down anywhere on a planet is easy, but setting it down manually at a specific location is a nightmare.
