Keyboard

Also, re: the space bar issue. My first board often missed key presses. I phoned Logitech, they sent me a replacement a few days later, and it worked perfectly. It can happen but it's not an intrinsic fault, so really shouldn't be a deal breaker.

Anyone used the Microsoft Sidewinder X6?

Looks like the kind of keyboard I want except the few macro butters on the left.

(nvm scrap this, apparently its 3 years old and nowhere stocks it :( !!)

I tried a display X4 once. I thought it felt awful, honestly. Same for the Razer Lycosa.

Do yourself a favour and get a mechanical keyboard. Once you get used to typing on them, they're not that loud. My friend and brother have both commented on my SteelSeries 7G being louder than a membrane keyboard, but not unbearably so. The noise shouldn't be too much of an issue unless you're in a room with someone trying to sleep, in which case a membrane keyboard won't be truly silent either.

If you're going for a quiet typing experience, you want red or black switches, ideally. Or browns, possibly. Blue are no good because they click half way through the key's travel.

Take a look at this for a comparison of the switch types.

I like the lycosa keyboard apart from its numerous issues with buttons etc, so if the X4 'feels' the same then it should be fine for me.

I assume you have updated the firmware and drivers yeah? What model number did you get. When I got one (which I had no problems with) I read up on the issue before buying and read that a certain part number had the issue and those after that didn't. Mine didn't and I bought mine well before you did. You might have got one of the earlier models....

Anyway, I've had a Lycosa, Copperhead, Blackwidow and Deathadder all without problems so I wouldn't rule out brands like Logitech and Razer because of what you read on the internet/individual product experience.

If you like the way the Lycosa feels, then the X4 could be good for you. I remember liking the X4 more than the Lycosa, but I wouldn't buy either.

It's entirely subjective, though. The only membrane keyboards I've tried and liked were an old Microsoft thing I used for about 3 years, and a rev. 1 G15 I got for free off a friend. My friend likes my 7G, but said he wouldn't give up his G19 for one because he likes the lights and the screen, so...
