That's what I was thinking about going back to - the UI leaves a lot to be desired though.

Yeah the UI isn't great but it is functional.
Apple Passwords is really good so far for me. Basic but does what I need.
I was a bit unsure with the “all the eggs in one basket” being in the Apple ecosystem, but it does make things very simple.
I think the main thing is you have a backup of your passwords, then the issue of being locked out of Apple in extremely rare case isn’t a problem to worry about.
I have a backup on usb stick, password protected and in a lock box.

Being in the Apple ecosystem it’s difficult to move away from the passwords app as the integration is a bit better than 3rd party. For my non-Apple devices I have a self-hosted vaultwarden as I think that is best. I have to manually sync between Apple and vaultwarden as I can’t think of a secure way to do it automatically.
I've had 1Password families for free via work, unfortunately that is coming to an end soon.
Continue to pay or look at something else?
Edit, think I'm going to use Vaultwarden self hosted. Already have an extensive container setup, cloudflared, and can use iOS passkey for 2fa login from the web. Just need to be disciplined with encrypted backups.

It's difficult to beat isn't it. I've stuck with it purely because it works well, doesn't bug me and doesn't seem to have had any issues and the faff of migrating to something else is annoying to me. I like the fact it has a cli option too.
Yeah it is great. Going to give Vaultwarden a go, can always reactive my 1PW account if I need to.
1password is good, I was just a tight git and didn't want to pay any more, especially once they increased the price this past year. Apple passwords is great, all be it not as feature rich as something like 1password. I think its hard to beat if your in the Apple ecosystem.
Proton pass? Related to Proton email?
The only email domain specifically banned from the forum because of the proliferation of malicious content from them. I wouldn’t trust them with anything, especially not passwords.

Proton Mail is popular on some "dodgy" areas of the web because they offer E2EE and it is free. Not surprising they attract a certain crowd.

I've tried a few and keep going back to that one... Really, really difficult to recommend anything else.
