For those who don't know http://www.kickstarter.com/

Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects. Everything from films, games, and music to art, design, and technology. Kickstarter is full of ambitious, innovative, and imaginative projects that are brought to life through the direct support of others.

Since our launch on April 28, 2009, over $350 million has been pledged by more than 2.5 million people, funding more than 30,000 creative projects. If you like stats, there's lots more here.

I know people have backed projects and thought it woud be interesting to see what people have backed, or are interested in.
The website is dire to search as it is with this new crazy design thinking.

Also they are due to allow uk projects on the website in teh autumn, so that should expand projects a lot very soon and be cheaper postage for us.

Anyway I've been very impressed with two projects. First I am going to back on payday.

Lifx
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/limemouse/lifx-the-light-bulb-reinvented?ref=category
LIFX is the smartest light bulb you've ever experienced. It's a wifi-enabled, energy efficient, multi-colored bulb that you control with your iPhone or Android. LIFX gives you unprecedented control of your lights, reduces your energy costs, lasts up to 25 years and delivers an amazing range of experiences we think you’ll love.

It is expensive but can see three good benefits, can use it to come on slowly to help wake you up, can use the colour and dim it for watching films, light switch no where near your bed, no problem.

the second gadget is
keylet
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects...l-key-and-wallet-all-in-one-system?ref=search

A sleek, minimal key and wallet system that is designed for the modern lifestyle. Custom Engraving available.
However due to cost and shipping cost. I'm going to see if I can find an online laser cutter place that can cut the parts, I can't imagine it'll cost to much. I also want to make a slight modification.

I spotted this in another thread when you talked about the light bulbs. What's the point in backing the first project? All of its sold out, they don't need any more money so you'de just be chucking money at them for no gain???

Why would you back something that's already received over $1,000,000 ?

Rubbish, when I first looked at it they weren't sold out.
It's still worth backing stuff when they have reached the target if they haven't sold out as you can get the actual product, months before general release and often cheaper.

And, the big news, we can finally reveal the bulb design will look very much like the ones below.
Link includes a video of an earlier prototype

Canceled my Bumm speaker backing.
Why do people make kickstarter campaigns then not respond to questions or make updates. Fills you with confidence. Ah well solemate or jambox it is then.

Also backed Snug, such a simple concept and very useful, shame shipping from states makes it expensive.

And Citivas

Why are uk projects still so few. Come on people design.

100k available for pre order :(, I hope some are left next Friday, no money ATM.

You'll really wear a bracelet that flashes? When I saw that kickstarter, the first thing I thought was... why?! :p

This and you really need to be connected to Facebook, emails etc that much you'll wear a flashing bracelet.

I don't really see the point in crowd-sourcing sites like kickstarter.

Why on earth would you want to fund a person or company to do something, an get no return whatsoever?

I could understand it if you there was a game that you really wanted made and purchased a copy in advance, but that's not the case. you fund something, then if you want it when it's finally made (if ever), you still have to buy it.

Huh?
Totally wrong, you do pre-order.
You do get something in return, I get a product at below retail price.
It's the complete opposite to what you say. Not only do I get something, they don't have to go conventional funding. Which means two things, no or less debt which means they don't pay interest, secondly you get more and different ideas. Traditional funding methods typically only go with proven concepts that are guaranteed returns, which means fantastic ideas are often overlooked as the market is unproven.

Awesome my first item has arrived from kickstarter, it looks great, time will tell how good it is, reading through the comments, I've got some old useless cards in there for a few days, till the O-rings slacken up a bit.
I'm impressed that a single guy and crowd finding project pays attention to the boxing.
It's the aluminium one and I chose no engraving or anything else, totally plain.

I don't get it, why not just use 2 elastic bands?

I mean how do you get the card you want out without the others? like the middle one.

Push out with the slot and press plates together. The slot is not for pinching or pulling. You hold it so slot faces the palm that the wallets held in, with other hand hook finger into slot and push the cards out a bit.

Rubber bands wouldn't last two seconds before braking.

It's already in the space thread but thought I would post it here as well.
Pledged for HD selfie, not that I want my ugly mug in space. Probably use a black image so just get the earth and the ARKYD pictured.

Over 50% already, so should reach the target.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1458134548/arkyd-a-space-telescope-for-everyone-0
The ARKYD is a technologically advanced, orbiting space telescope that will be controlled by YOU, the crowd, through your pledges and community involvement! You can even direct your telescope time to non-profit science centers and universities for use in your communities!

Just think about the true impact of this endeavor for a moment. Together we can provide access to technology that costs tens of millions of dollars into the hands of students, scientists and a new generation of explorers, who will use it in ways we can’t even fathom yet!

At Planetary Resources, our primary focus is mining asteroids, and we’re pushing the boundaries of what is possible by vertically integrating and applying innovations from consumer-based industries. It’s our goal to reduce the cost of space observatories many times over, allowing anyone to access them for their own use. We want to empower the crowd to solve the big problems of our time — and this is the first step to making that a reality.
