Some old man just turned up at my partner's block of flats with two large dogs off their leads. They caught and killed a friend of ours cat. The old man did nothing apparently other than shout at the dogs then left quickly. The cat's owner was out but came back and went looking for him.

I'm a little shocked as we have two cats who are a bit silly and like to play out the front where the dogs were. I think I would have not been able to control myself if one of our girls had been killed by them.

What do you do about this sort of thing? Report them to the police?

Patience, they'll be back...

People who walk their dogs off the lead through streets, residential areas without a muzzle should be fined.

What breeds of dogs? Some are bred to kill animals like this. My parents dogs actually killed a cat that was in our garden before as well.

Animal against animal attacks can't be prosecuted, sadly unless it's against a guide dog/hearing dog.

However a dog doesn't have to bite a human to be deemed as dangerous under the law anymore, so you could argue you felt threatened.

Incidentally, my Labrador will attempt to chase cats. I don't know what she would do if she actually got hold of one.

If an owner is complicit in the act and doesn't attempt to stop it they can be charged.

I had a staffie when I was younger. He used to chase cats but if he caught up with them, they’d invariably turn round and hiss and scratch at him and he would absolutely crap himself and come tearing back with his tail between his legs. Never once found the cojones to take one on! However, he was tough as nails when it came to bigger dogs than himself!

Punish the owner, but take the dogs away and rehome them with someone more responsible.

I feel the same way about people with children... !!

On a slightly different note, I've known of several very well-behaved and on-lead dogs that have been attacked by cats. The dogs ended up being quite badly scratched up. I'd therefore ask what evidence there is that these two dogs didn't get attacked in the first place, as well as how the small, fast cat was unable to escape two large, lumbering dogs.... and if there was a witness, why they didn't take details, photos, or even call the Police there and then...?

i don't know, Our neighbours dogs escaped this weekend and chased our cats, neighbour was shouting at them and trying to grab them but 1 person and 4 dogs ain't easy.

I'd have been upset if our cat had been got, but id have understood "cats and dogs after all", the wife on the other hand would have probably BBQ'd the dogs up.

One of our cats teases the hell out of those dogs sitting on the fence making them bark, guess they found a way out.
