A couple have been arrested by police on suspicion of cruelty and neglect of their obese child.

A 49-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman, from King's Lynn in Norfolk, were questioned by officers over the child's care and released on bail.

Police said intervention at this level was "very rare" and only occurred where other attempts to protect the child had been unsuccessful.

A spokeswoman added police were working with health and social services.

The couple were arrested in March on suspicion of child neglect and cruelty under section 1 of the Children's Act 1933.

"When dealing with sensitive issues such as obesity and neglect of children, officers from the force's Child Abuse Investigation Unit work closely with partners, significantly with both health care and social services, to ensure any response to address them are proportionate and necessary," police said.

"Any action taken by any agency will be subject to a joint strategy and will always be taken with the welfare of the child and their protection from harm as paramount."

Norfolk County Council said it could not comment on individual cases.

A spokeswoman added: "Our priority will always be the health, well-being and safety of Norfolk's children and we will always do all we can to support families to meet their children's needs."

Strange situation, not sure is more worrying!!

What is wrong with people!! They are asking for trouble and this is totally unnecessary, but that's China people who post completely off topic for you!!

Did the abuse the child by making it fat or is it just an incidental detail?

Was wondering this myself, are they just mentioning that because it's a more interesting headline?

This morning when i was getting my coffee and croissant from the bakery, a couple of school kids came in and bought cakes. I hope it was just because of left over pocket money or something and not because their parents gave them money purposely for cakes for breakfast.

Sometimes I sort of think we should take the food away from fat people.

I'm a big guy right, I'm overweight, but some of these fat *******s? ****ing hell.

If you're so fat you need a care worker to wash you an a shopmobility to get around, we're gonna put you on the "Enough of this ****" diet.

Reckon it should apply to kids and all, there's fat and then there's narwhal - if you let your kid get to narwhal then it's highly concerning.

Indeed. It's really sad to see what some children eat all the time. Not a vegetable in sight.

What doesn't help is the ease if access to mobile communication and games platforms. Kids would rather sit indoors and play electronic games than go out. Parents should really be more sensible and limit the play time. Easily done by arranging days out or little walks. There's plenty to do!!

My son sure as hell won't get away with it as long as he lives under my roof, that for sure.

@pitchfork - Narwhal is genius! Made me laugh!!

Kids adopt the culture their friends and parents have. There are plenty of kids who are active an prefer it that way. It's not like kids will naturally just want to stay in.

I was listening to this on LBC on the way to work.

They said the parents nicknamed him Wee Chubby. What a lovely parents. According to the LBC report too the Father is 20 stone too.

Like father like son eh !!

I fail to see how any kid at 11 years old can be this FAT !! I am a big guy now, but I was a skinny runt when I was younger because I played sport at school, ran around for hours after school and didn't eat junk when I was younger.

Time we made obesity a crime actually. All those convicted should serve time on treadmills and exercise bikes attached to the national grid, to help give something back to the power companies who suffer. If any of them are non-white we should also remove them to Scotland and make sure they vote for segregation in the referendum. Oh, and vote UKIP!

(Actually, I don't think the article contained enough information for me to ascertain any particular details about the case or it's potential outcomes. Therefore I went with some generic right winged or bigoted views to promote an argument on these forums.
