Kitten$$$$

It's important to choose a cat for it's personality. Even at a young age they can develop traits they never lose. To me there are thousands of lost and unwanted cats in the rescue centres and I would prefer one from these. Having said that, the rescue centres will ask for a contribution these days ( bad idea in my opinion ) and this can be up to £100 per cat.

Also the rescue centres will not allow you to adopt if you intend to keep the cat indoors.

Virtually none of them. Places like Cats Protections say it is a cat's "right" to live an outdoor life and they would rather keep the cats than give them to an indoor existence.

To me that's strange, but hey ho. I wrote to them a couple times and basically they just said, "It's our policy because cats should live outside."

You would think they would be happy to give a cat a home.

I let my cats our, but I can see no harm in keeping them in. Cats can unwillingly get caught up in territorial battles, get run over, get fleas and so on, and so on, so I perfectly understand that some people want to keep them in. Every single one of the cats the Protection League has, has been allowed out and promptly got itself lost!!! I have three here that all failed to find their way back when they went out!! I don't really think a cat minds so much when they are kept in.

Easy solution to this - adopt one with "cat AIDS" or FIV... then you have to keep them indoors lest they infect other cats... they can still live a normal-ish life etc.. (in fact they'll live longer on average than outdoor cats)

So don't tell them? Other than an initial aftercheck they're not going to keep surveillance cameras on you.

Get from a shelter and you save double the lives. One live to go live with you, frees up another space for anothe rto be rescued. Win Win when you get from a shelter. As a bonus, shelter rescue kittens are usually spayed and injections already.

Or do your homework and buy from a good/reputable breeder. It's not hard.

All breeders of purebreds are the issue. If the animal is purebred it will either suffer from issues or eventually suffer from issues.

Do your homework and look at what these so-called purebreds used to look like, its not hard to see what they are doing to the poor animals.

It is animal cruelty made into a business.

None of the local cat rescue centres I have dealt with have that policy. In fact the opposite is true, preferring cats to be kept indoors to cut down on them getting lost and going feral, run over, and/or spreading diseases to each other.

Cats Protection will allow certain cats to be adopted for example ones with FIV/sight issues. I don't know how far their stance goes on other cats for example if the cats had access to a 'catio' would that suffice for outdoor access.

The US kennel club recognises 195 breeds of dog and has another 79 under consideration. Have you checked all of them, and are confident that in every case the bred-in characteristics include items which are detrimental to the dogs health?

I understand the point you're trying to make about breed standards potentially not being in the interests of the dog. And I agree that it's the case for some breeds. But I'm not sure it's fair to say this is true for all purebreed dogs.

I must admit I had no idea there was this much hostility towards cat and dog breeds.

What puzzles me is what people think the world will look like without recognised breeds. I.e. what good doing away with them would achieve. How would you enforce the idea of a dog not belonging to a breed, and how would you stop people from wanting a certain "type" of dog, and how would you ensure that dogs of a certain "type" did not exist?

More questions than answers really!
