Kittens

That'll be fine :) if you have any scales it might also be an idea to make sure you are putting enough down. just go by whatever the packet says. Although they only eat a little at a time it's all going into growing bigger so you'll see them grow quite fast.

:D I just hope I find one in the next few days, I've emailed someone who had some for sale but they haven't replied yet :( I can't visit the re-homing centre as I'm at college.

I was also watching that video at the Pet Shop and it said that Cat's don't like tap water they prefer filtered water :O also not to feed them lots of Tuna as it lacks something that they need (Can't remember what it was) Was quite interesting just stood there watching that aha :p

The water thing is dependant on the cat. Some will happily drink water from the tap, others don't. Some owners believe it is because they can smell/taste the chlorine in the water as well as anything else the ebil govt/ has added to make us all docile. Generally cats don't drink much anyway hence why so many give them wet food which contains all the moisture.

The tuna thing is true though. Cats need something called Taurine. This keeps their eyes healthy (and something else which I forget). It's natural in mice and things which is what cats would eat in the wild but not in the part of the Tuna you get to eat. Another "problem" with feeding too much fish is heavy metal poisoning, mostly mercury. The ocean is filled with chemicals and crap that isn't supposed to be there. These are called bio accumulators.

A small shrimp eats some and it doesn't flush out. This tiny shrimp is then eaten by a fish which maybe eats 100 a day and therefore gets a bigger dose of the chemical. Another fish eats 100 of these fish and so on and so fourth.

Generally it's not a heavily major concern (apart from for activists and stuff) as the bigger the predator the more of the bio accumulator their body can handle. Obviously cats are usually quite a lot smaller than a Tuna and so if you were to feed them too much it might potentially cause an issue.

However, don't go fretting over it every time you give them tuna. Ours get a can between them every once in a while as a treat and they do without a doubt love it. If you want to feed them a little tuna then try and get cans in Spring Water rather than oil or brine. You can i think get specific "cat" tuna which has Taurine added to keep the cat healthy.

I warn you now that this is my last night shift so these essay answers are going to dry up later tonight!!

Hopefully the water issue will be fine, if not I will have to buy a water filter which I can hopefully pick up cheaply. I think its always nice to treat an animal once in a while because I don't want it to just keep having the same food.

The thread has gotten quite quiet lately but hopefully once I get my kitten it will pick up again as I will be posting plenty of pictures.

Thanks for all of the info as well :)

i am thinking of getting my 4 year old son a kitten/cat for his birthday, he is a little bit scared of em, but he is getting better around em as he played & stroked my friend's kitten on new year, he really seemed at home but still wary of them. do you think it would be a good idea or leave well alone?

I think if your friend is okay with it keep taking your son there to get comfortable with them and then maybe take him to choose one when he feels safe around them

I'd suggest letting him get a little more comfortable first. Kittens like children will put anything they can into their mouths and nip at it. As an adult it doesn't hurt and its rare in my experience for them to bite down at all. However for a 4 year old it might come as a little shock if he isn't expecting it. Aside from that I think kittens/cats are great for kids as they are generally a lot calmer and less bullish than dogs.

remember to cut their nails regularly if you want to have your couch in one piece!

Good shout :p

I've had no reply from the lady I contacted about the Kittens, tried to give her a ring and no answer :(

I asked my cousin to ask her mum if she knows anyone as she runs a Cattery so fingers crossed

I realise this thread is quite late on now, but i just wanted to add, and in advance i have nothing against rehoming and/or rescue however:

Much of a cats personality and behaviour is instilled when it is a very young kitten in the care of its mother. A mother that keeps itself well groomed and clean will likely instill the same trait in her kittens. A kitten that is used to human contact and handling from the earliest possible age will be more human-centered than one who has little to no contact.

Basically, personality matters, and a breeder is far more likely to know what they are doing than an accidental birth. I am not saying you cannot get a 'good' cat from a rescue litter; just be aware that personality is just as, if not more important than cuteness :)

Oh and neuter, vaccinate and chip. It is not expensive and you have absolutely no excuse not to.

With every animal we get whether it's from a re-homing centre or not we always take them to the vets to get their vaccines etc (didn't mean that to sound nasty)

Got in touch with the lady earlier about the Kittens she had and they've all gone :/ It's getting harder to find any around my local area as my Dad doesn't want to travel anywhere -.-

Have you tried that website place that is both chewable and prone to sprouting wonderful fruit, nuts, foliage but never money?

Please remember that a cat has only 2 defences. Its teeth and its claws. If you cut the claws back too far they'll be more tempted to bite if they feel the claws aren't working.

Clipping the ends is fine but don't get too over zealous with it.

In addition our three are fine on the furniture because they have a dedicated scratch post and they use it.

Just give it a cat post with some catnip on it.. If you spot it attempting to scratch some furniture give it a loud shout and stamp your foot... My cat got the message quick. oh yeah goodluck with trying to cut its claws.. make sure you have plenty of tissue and plasters :D

What website is that? lol

We are buying a scratching post later in the week I think :D Can't seem to find any Kittens about in our local area at the moment :(

We've had our Kittens since July now and they've grown up so fast, quite remarkable when you look back at the pictures of them.

With regards to claws on furniture, ours have generally been fine, apart from them leaping at the sofas with claws out when chasing each other around - perfectly normal though and hasn't done any significant damage (wouldn't fancy it with a leather sofa though). They use their scratching post loads, so make sure you get them a good one. We bought a double tier one with dangling toys which they seem to enjoy.

+1 on making sure they get taurine in their diet. We put a small saucer of cat milk (lactose free with added taurine) down for our two to share each night which they love.

Where do you buy the milk from? I've seen kitten milk in cartons from the pet shop but didn't really look what was in it

hope you can find a kitten soon mate you seem really up for it im sure it will love you. :D

Thanks :D

My Dad's being a let down as he doesn't want to travel outside our local area :/ and the only place that has any Kittens is a rescue centre just outside of town but it's only open on Wednesday between 12 - 2 (For the re-homing part) and it might be a struggle to get up there as I'm back at college then :(

Fingers crossed it will love me aha :p

Kitten milk is usually goats milk as its fairly close to cats. I dread to think of the outrage if someone actually started milking cats!
