Has there been some law change I've missed about buying knives? I just went to order my selection of chefs knives and after taking payment I get a message saying I need to give them my DoB and a copy of either my driving licence, passport or birth certificate to "prove my age" this despite I've just paid by credit card which you cannot have without being 18. WTF? I am not sending copies of my personal identity documents to a random website just to buy a kitchen knife set. I will just wait for shops to reopen and buy it on the highstreet. Also how does a birth certificate prove anything? And how does a photo ID prove anything when they can't see me to start with? I could provide any old image and they have no way to verify it. What a joke. £100 knife or identity theft. Hmmm not much of a decision that one.

SFAIK the requirement is to confirm buyers are 18yo+ for which paying by credit card to the cardholders address ought to be sufficient.
I guess you're free to post it to them so they can have a look in person
It's not. Legally they have to ID you.
It could be a 12 year old kid using their parents, they don't know that and could get fined.

A high street shop will just look at the card and hand it back. That's good enough for me. I pointed out that (as your objection) the requirement should be ID at the point of delivery - there is no guarantee that the ID provided is the person receiving it either. They are taking an ID on trust, not even able to match it to the person's face. It's pointless IMO and just means supplying ID documents for storage on some random website server. No thanks. Other stores require proof of age at the point of delivery - that should suffice, not demanding a copy of the ID to store.

Had similar BS from an Amazon delivery man who wanted those ID documents for... a set of 1/8" diameter router bits! I said no. He stood there confused until I told him to take that package and the other 3 he had for me and stick them in his... van. It's insane.
I bought an angle grinder online with no ID required whatosever. The driver looked at me and just went "age confirmed". Which is more dangerous? That or an 8cm pairing knife? FFS they even want ID to order a pastry (wide wave bread) knife. That's not even that sharp as things go! I might try ordering a blunt palette knife and see if they want it for that too.

And herein lies the problem. You're complaining that the driver was too lax about the angle grinder because he looked at you and decided you were over 18, but then also have an issue that you've been asked for ID for an item that you don't believe to be dangerous.
They just can't win.
No, where was I complaining about that? I'm saying the company had a sensible approach and that was for something more potent than a simple utility pairing knife. The driver checked just the same as a shop assistant would - and that is all that should be required.

How does that sharpening system work? I can't see how it is going to keep the same angle from what it has at the middle of the blade to when it is rotated to the ends, especially on long knives. It also looks like it will wear out the stones quite quickly as they will constantly be running along the same line across the width of the stone, leaving a groove, as opposed to using the full length of the stone and keeping it even.
I could be completey wrong as I may be interpreting how it works incorrectly, as I have never used one like that.

I take it it's too late to send them back? A 3000 grit stone should not feel rougher than a 1500, even if they are different makes.
My wife got ID'd for a 16 piece cutlery set bought from Amazon, despite answering the door carrying our 11 month old daughter and being followed by our 4 year old. Did make me laugh when she told me
I think their policy is ID, no matter what. It takes the decision process away from the driver. My partner is in her 50's and she was asked for ID.
