Knocked off yesterday

Looking at the parts damaged, does anyone think it might be worth repairing? The frame damage concerns me, and I should imagine there aren't many second hand parts knocking about for an MT-07. There is loads they've left off the list too - handlebars for example and most all of the paneling. As they've not started the bike, presumably there could be internal issues too.

Also how does salvage work? Am I best to get the bike back and then shop it around locally for the best price, or let them take care of it for me? Will they take a fee for this?

That's just such bs!

Total repair cost of just under £5k but they're going to pay out £5.6k? If they put it through repair that would create jobs and also not split £600 onto everyone's premiums!

Insurance companies are so quick to write-off nowadays.

As to fixing it yourself, I don't know if you get to look at it. Frame damage could be as simple as a few scuffs and scrapes. It sounds like a complete front end rebuild though.

Depends like you said, you can always break it down and sell off the parts? The engine alone would be worth £1500/£2000?

Your main expense would be the tank/forks/frame and subframe, they might be able to straighten them but not if there's any folds/creases in the metal

Personally i would take the offer and made up with what you will get for the personal injury claim ( at least 2k if are having touble walking and off work etc ) just buy the same bike again from new. If your back is beat up and you cannot walk that is enough for an injury claim, if they are not going to put you right financially then screw em.

A couple of points to consider;

1) If you keep the bike and get it repaired are you going to feel the same about it when you're out riding it? It may sound stupid but when this happened to me I didn't ever enjoy riding my crashed / repaired bike as much after I got it back, when I replaced the bike afterwards it was like starting out fresh and I enjoyed riding my new bike a lot more.

2) The assessors will not know if there has been any internal engine damage from the impact of the bike hitting the ground and by the looks of the report haven't even bothered checking that the engine is able to turn over. 8 weeks after getting my bike back from being repaired following my crash one of the valves went and I was faced with an expensive repair or taking a hit on a trade in price, I chose the latter. I can't say for sure that the valve giving way was as a result of the impact of the bike hitting the deck but my gut feeling is that it was.

Cheque from the 3rd party insurers came through today. Im quite gutted really because as expected, their final offer is more than a grand less than I need to buy another brand new bike. Aside from that, there are no second hand ones for sale anywhere in the country that are close to my bikes spec/milage/age/colour, and not even a single used MT-07 for sale within 100 miles of me. So I'm £1068 out of pocket for something that wasn't at all my fault, and if I ordered a new bike now it wouldn't even be delivered for a couple of months......bang into winter. Think I'll just wait until next year to replace it.

I have learned a lesson with this anyway and will be sure to consider gap insurance in future!

That's pretty crap. :( Are you set on getting another MT07

What is gap insurance?

I thought if you weren't at fault then you wouldn't have had to pay the excess as that is usually covered by the other party ?

No you wouldn't if you're not at fault but if your excess is high and there's a dispute well that may not come out in your favour. Or possibly you are at fault or you just lose your bike cause some sod stole or set it on fire then in my case I'd automatically lose £1050, which happened to me earlier this year. So not only did the insurance company value the bike for much less than I paid but they also deducted the excess which is a huge loss.

Why did you accept their offer?

Because it was their 3rd and final offer. The policy wording is quite explicit in saying that they only need pay out the pre accident value of the bike, which they have done. I have a motorbike specific solicitor dealing with it and they have said I wont get another penny from the insurers for the bikes value. Its just an unfortunate situation in that there are virtually no used MT-07s for sale, with it being such a new model of bike. Will just have to use the injury compensation to cover the difference. Pretty disheartened with the whole system though.

The only problem now is getting the full engineers value for the salvage out of them!

I wonder how much you would have lost anyway from buying new and rolling out of the showroom?

I know you always lose a fair chunk

did they give you the option to buy back the bike? think I saw you mention it,but bike could have been too badly damaged

And now the insurers are offering a further £1000 less for the salvage than the engineer has quoted. What an absolute nightmare this whole thing is! Anybody know the best way to get rid of bike salvage to get me as close to the engineers figure as possible? Is it a case of trying to strip parts myself and ebay them?!
