Kwik-Fit

Went to one a few years back and they had sprinkled some brake dust on one of the discs and told me that one of the pots was sticking. Tried to charge £400 for some new brakes (discs, pads and calipers on both sides)

Told them to stuff it and by the time i'd driven home there was no trace of brake dust, the sticking pot seemed to have rubbed it off... actually thinking about it, the brakes probably only had one pot anyway.

Wish i'd taken pictures since any evidence of foul play was gone by the time i'd realised.

Took my car to them to have the tracking done since we had changed the lower arms on it. We guessed the tracking and it was almost right so they didn't have a lot to do.

Picked up the car about 45 mins later and it was horrendous, pulled severely to the left so I took it straight back. The bloke that did it said he couldnt get it to adjust properly, so instead he'd let me drive off in a dangerous vehicle. His boss had a go for 45 mins before telling me that the track rod was bent and thats why it couldnt be adjusted.

It certainly wasn't bent before then! A while later I changed the track rod and discovered that the muppet who had tried to adjust it had put so much heat on the thing he had managed to melt the plastic cup at the other end of the track rod, causing the whole assembly to be loose.

he done well to bend it by hand if thats the case..!

I couldn't understand how he had managed it, it is a fairly hefty chunk of metal. When I took it off it was indeed banana shaped, so he must have put some serious effort into that!

... looked up [some brand of tyres I have never heard of], they are bad bad tyres ...
I don't happen to need any new tyres at the moment, just having bought a new Hyundai i20.

However, I did recently get four new tyres fitted by ProTyre to another car immediately prior to its MOT and would have liked before agreeing to buy them, to have researched the tyres at some reputable, independent source; I wonder if you could tell me where you "looked up" the "bad bad tyres" offered to you by Kwik-Fit

Thanks :)

Thats unreal, although not totally unexpected. I went to a local kwik fit (at the last minute) and I insisted I watched them fit my exhaust. After he fitted my exhaust he proceeded to try to find anything wrong with his screwdriver, I told him to just do the job he was being paid for and not to try to find work for his bonus. He chuntered that he was just trying to earn a wage and not to give him grief.

Everything is done on commission at these places, beware.

Surely you would want to know if something was wrong! You'd be under no obligation to use there services.

This is true, however some of my work collegues that used to work in the trade, say that it's a way of guaranteeing sales/bonus and is an unwritten rule, allegedly.

Its often the way, that if a sales rep/fitter instills a little bit of worry on the customer, then they will often er on the side of caution and pay for the work to be done. Its this work which could be called into question, if taken to trading standards and beyond, that gives motor repair centres a bad reputation.

I always recommend that if your motor experience is lacking, then try to get a second opinion, or, take someone with you who is knowledgeable in repairs.

You make it sound as if this is unique to Kwik-Fit. It isn't, it is standard procedure at ALL garages, including authorised dealerships

I went for a brake check at kwik-fit yesterday and was actually told that they are fine and no work needs to be done! I'm not sure if I should be relieved or worried :p

I made the mistake of doing a mot at kwik fit simply due to the fact it was close to work and i could do it while going back to work ..... NEVER AGAIN.
Besides wanting £379 for a centre and back box on a corsa some of the advisories such as slight discoluring on indicator (garage i took it to just cleaned it) Slight play in stearing (garage didnt note it) any many more they couldnt find / replecate

don't ever buy exhausts from kwik fit.

its the cheapest crap you can get from the motorfactors with a markup of about 70%.

even though they show you the book that shows you the oe system, what the actually pull it out its normally horrendous.. especially the backboxes. Get ready for a godawful drone throughout most the rev range :p
