Kwik-Fit

It's part and parcel - say they fail you on the breaks and use my example as above. It's not about the pass / fail that is the problem but the work done there after (unless it sails through of course).

Never had an MOT at kwik fit before, but Have used them to fix a few punctures.... mostly fine except the time when He put the directional tyre on the wrong way. Have asked them for quotes for various things in the past (tyres, exhausts etc) and local indies always work out cheaper / better ime.

I've heard it said the best place to get MOT done is the council operated test stations, as they have no vested interest in doing any work, or trying to sell you any parts, but obviously if your car does need work doing then you need to take it somewhere else (or back home) to get the work done.

Take it to your local council run MOT Centre if you can. Find your local one here...

Council centres test for pass or fail only. They do not "find work" to be done as they do not do any work on site for the public, but you are allowed to book in for a test there.

Errm..

Have booked in my car for an MOT and full service in January with Kwikfit - wish me luck :p

Figured I would try them as it is super easy to leave the car with them while at work.

The man wants an MOT not a new set of brakes.

I wouldnt trust Kwik Fit to adjust my tyre pressure but they are welcome to do an MOT on a car i know is going to pass, i mean who gives a toss where the MOT comes from?

I suppose if you are pushing a car onto some punter you wouldn't, but I'd rather it was done properly.

The staff are friendly enough - there's times when I've needed exhaust gaskets/ clamps and they've given me them free of charge!

Only used their services once - paid £12 to have two solid centre wheels balanced before a track day. Wasn't surprised when I fitted them and had loads of wheel wobble.

I was really apprehensive about booking my MOT and full service with Kwikfit given the stories I have read here and reports from friends and family. Turns out the one in Bath is pretty good and they didn't even try to con me out of any money. My car is an SLK and it passed the MOT without any problems and received some really good feedback from the service - there were a couple of advisories that I found useful - rear tyres (I had noticed this myself, so went somewhere cheaper to get them replaced), my battery has a relatively low charge and my auxilary drive belt is perishing. Otherwise all good.

Think next year I will take it to a Mercedes Benz specialist to check on things like transmission oil and to hook it up to the computer to see if there are any error codes stored.

After a recommendation from an OCD Jag enthusiast I booked my Xtype in for a major service. I have to say I was very cautious but I need not have worried best service any car I have owned. Beats the Jaguar and BMW dealers I have used.
Very pleased.

Well the MOT is an MOT, they cant fail your car on items which arent a fail can they.

You have to be an approved MOT tester etc etc blah blah so its not just anyone doing it for you, the work experience kid wont have a go like he might do if you went in for some tyres.

Id say go for it and see what happens.

The average person knows nothing about cars, so what's to stop them saying something (that the punter can't see) is worn out or broken, even if it's not?
I've had a good experience with kwik fit once, but I just went to replace a battery, and that's what they did. I've found a test centre that has MOT'd my car for the last few years, and they've never failed it on anything other than a windscreen wiper or a bulb, so I trust them not to look for work to do that isn't there. I'd say a recommended independent garage is the best bet.

I can't post the link because it's sort of a competitor with price comparisons of all sorts of products, but they have 8 pages of kwikfit reviews, about 160 reviews, most with 1 out of 5 stars. Here's just 4 of them.

Useless Rip-Off Merchants!
Kwik Fit
Taking advantage of a £30 MOT offer, I took my CR-V to Kwik-Fit on Manchester Road in Bolton. 2 hours later, I had a phone call explaining that the car had failed it's MOT because of worn brake pads, 1 worn tyre, 1 split tyre, 1 fractured drop-joint, 1 worn drop-joint and the brake pedal was travelling all the way to the floor. Total bill for the above work (including a 60% mark-up on a Honda master cylinder) was £960!! I can't argue about the drop-joints or the split tyre, but the supposedly worn tyre was well within the limits and the fault on the brake pedal had been caused by them! There was no fault with the pedal when I dropped it off. I told the useless **** to put the car back together and went and picked it up. They then told me that they had tried to bleed the brakes to sort out the brake pedal and that I owed them £40 for brake fluid! I told the chap that the brake pedal was fine when I dropped it off so I was not happy to pay them to break my car! Got the key back and drove it to a local garage. The master cylinder was ok - Kwik-fit had got air into the system somehow (?) and could not get it out and the total bill for the repairs to get it through the MOT was £300.
The key thing here is that Kwik-Fit employ boss-eyed spanner monkeys who have no idea what they are doing and that they think that they have you by the short and curlies when they maul with your car. They stand to make no profit from you if your car passes it's MOT so it is their interest to bleed you dry.

Kwik-Fit, Rutherglen, Glasgow; An absolute disgrace.
Kwik Fit , Customer Services Department; Just as bad.

I had my car MOT'd last week at Kwik Fit, Rutherglen. It failed on 3 points, namely headlamp alignment, cv gator insecure and a corroded brake pipe. Being a police vehicle examiner and ex VOSA examiner there is no way that the brake pipe was an MOT fail. I did however replace it at a cost of £40.85 at my local garage to repair all the faults, kwik fit price £224.

As the previous reviews, another example of preying on those they think are "mug" punters.

Their customer services department are just as poor attempting to justify the branch's actions. Don't be tempted by a cheap MOT you will end up paying in the long run.

I would urge everyone not to any Kwik-Fit as it does seem company policy to rip people off.

.....................................................

Had my brakes done in August and when i had MOT done in Sept by the dealeship they said they had done it wrong and the brakes were siezing. This cost me half an hour labour plus parts to sought it out.
Should only use their prices as a guide and get work done else where.
Change there name from Kwik Fit to Slap Dash.

will never use them again

Advantages: can arrange your MOT time
Disadvantages: can't trust them

I'm still too upset to list all the details, but my MOT at Kwik Fit this week was an experience I would not wish on anyone and cost me £450! I had some bad experience before at a small garage, so I thought - a nationwide well recognized chain, surely they can't take you for a ride?! Oh yes, they can - and what pleasure they take from it! They also make it last the whole day, so you get value for your money!
For the last two hours I sat at their waiting area and watched them changing the shock absorbers on my car - they couldn't even be bothered to at least pretend that they were working. Most of them were watching pictures on a colleague's mobile. At ten to six they realized they better throw the tires back on my car, forget wheel alignment (although I was charged for it). The final bill was even higher than the quote they gave after the MOT. When I questioned it, I was told that they couldn't quite establish what the problem with the handbrake was at the time of the test. So just for extra fun they threw in some handbrake adjustment for £25 and brake bleed for £11.95. I was too tired and upset to argue any further. Lesson learnt! I would strongly advise you to shop around.
Summary: will not use Kwik Fit again

I seriously seriously dont know why people take there cars to these places

I found out the hard way that they are commercial money grabbing you know what.

Took for an MOT years ago, they failed it on a few things, repair cost ~£450, grabbed the noticies of them

Said sod that, ill take it to my local garage for a re-test, took it through, most of the stuff kwik fit had failed me were ok and should have gone through bar a one minor thing

Since then iv seen a mates get ripped off by them also

Find a nice local garage is my advice, if you want to go to kwik fit, dont forget your lube, your going to need it.

Very much hit & miss, it depends on the deopt and the staff they have there.

Good & bad in all large chains, alas, my experience has been, generally, bad.
