tries it on another comp, also an apple though. same issue, mounts ok (a bit slow to appear though) then after a random period of use just unmounts. no funny noises, spinning down or anything...
gonna do a little more research then it'll probably be RMA rime if nothing comes up.

Does Bitlocker work on external drives? Might do the trick.

Well of course if thats where your data is.

I use laptops so 95% of my data is on externals.

replaced the feeble USB cable that was provided with the drive with a decent spare i had and it seems to have fixed the problems I was having.
