Right guys,

Looking for serveral ext. hard drives for backup...

either the LaCie http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-048-LC&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=911

or the Western Digital Mybook
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-086-WD&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=911

Not sure on the pro/premium versions with blue light or the white version of the mybook

Anyone have any recommendations on these? Reading reviews everywhere, and it seems WD has a high failure rate, and a lot of dismantling issues from windows. Lacie just seems to be loud, not sure what to get guys. Help!

I've always gone for WD drives just through personal experience with others. I'm looking to get one of these myself in the near distant future, though I'm going to get the firewire one for better sustained transfers (I've around 230 GB to backup EEK!)

The Lacie devices use Seagate HD's I believe?
Depends who ya trust I guess - WD or Seagate.

When I purchased my external 2.5" drive I went for the Lacie unit.

I thought that Lacie used Maxtor hard drives?

I'll be honest and say I haven't cracked one open so I dare not confirm or deny one way or another - I was just under the impression they were Seagate :)

I dont know about WD, but I'm not impressed with LaCie's customer service. I had an email this morning saying they've lost the power supply I sent them 2 weeks ago. Luckily I sent it Special Delivery, so I have proof it got there! Just waiting for their reply now...

PK!

ive had both, the reviews about noise are rubbish, the 500GB porsche doent have a fan..... go figure, my three are ok, my wd mybook gets hot, my seagsate cooks itsself then self distructs........

I use a WD MyBook - it makes no noise whatsoever and doesn't have a fan. I selected it because it is my last-resort backup, and I know what WDs are reliable.

If you are interested, I manage just under 40MBps sustained read according to HDTach

just to let you know, i opted for the 500GB standard green ring black WD MyBook, so far so good. Did take me over 3 hours to format the damn thing in NTFS lol. But it seems good so far, doesnt get hot, surprisingly as there is no fan, nice and quiet too.

Slight hijack here, but does the My Book still have a problem with Vista PC's?

As my laptop will be Vista Home Premium 32 and my desktop though it Xp sp2 now will be moving to Vista Ultimate 64 in the next month or so.

No issues with Vista at all apart from the MyBook World. It still works through IP access but Mionet software is still currently in development.

yeah i would have gone for the WD my book as well

as for the LaCie External Hard Drives, they use to use Maxtor hdds but now they use Seagate hdds.
so ive been told anyway
