LaCie external hard drive, eSATA doesn't work...

I have recently the other day just purchased a LaCie external hard drive model 301315EK, the 1TB version that is designed by Neil Poulton consisting of 3 different interfaces you can use to connect to your PC, USB2.0, eSATA and Firewire 400.

What I want to talk about is the fact that I've had problems with the eSATA interface of the drive and there doesn't seem to be any kind of solution. I don't know exactly but I think that the drive I bought from Overclockers seems to be fine, it works and I can copy and access files onto it. I have partitioned the drive into 4 using Paragon Partition Manager software. Everything seems to have worked correctly and it's not like I have never partitioned a hard drive before either. At first the drive seemed to connect using the eSATA interface but then I noticed that it started to disappear in Windows XP, currently the 32 bit version I'm using, when you plug the drive in and start using it now you might be able to access the drive for a short period of time but then it will disappear and you can't access it anymore.

It is very annoying because I was hoping to buy this drive and use the eSATA feature. It seems to work very fast which is what I want really, I've also tried using the USB 2.0 and Firewire 400 interface and they work just fine. There's no problem, I've had it working the whole time on USB 2.0 and Firewire but just with eSATA it doesn't connect very well at all.

I'm using the cable I got with the drive to connect to my PC, I don't even have another type of cable needed to travel from the back of my computer's eSATA port to my LaCie drive.

I've done everything I can possibly think of to try and resolve this issue but there's no joy, I even before tried to repartition the drive again to make sure it wasn't having a problem there but it was just the same as before. So yes as I said before it works fine no problem with USB 2.0 and Firewire 400 but with eSATA it is a no no... It just seems to be very unstable using that connection and most of the time doesn't work. There's nothing wrong with my operating system either, everything is working just fine and as normal.

Can anybody suggest something here? I am done with this now, can't think of anything it could be, might as well at this point just forget the eSATA and just use Firewire instead, which I might also add seems to be a bit faster than USB 2.0 also which is probably the interface I plan to use it with at the moment.

Hi... yeah I did notice that in the bios before but didn't know what it was. I have had it set to IDE since I got the drive. So you're saying it should be set to AHCI. What's that supposed to be for anyway that setting?

My PC Spec is...

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66Ghz X2 (FSB 1333Mhz)
Corsair memory 2GB DDR2
ASUS P5K Motherboard
2 SATA Western Digital HDDs (320 GB each)
M-Audio Delta Audiophile 192 Soundcard
XFX Radeon HD 4870 XXX 1GB Graphics
Coolermaster 650 watt PSU

ACHI means you can plug/unplug sata and esata drives in while the computer is on. try plugging the HDD in with the machine off and then switch it on

Well I have tried that but it's only made matters worse. ACHI set in the bios has caused the machine to screw up and it spends ages booting, also can't see my DVD drives anymore on the IDE channels. No good really, I'm gonna have to go back to the IDE mode, setting ACHI doesn't help my problem...

I have the P5K Deluxe Wifi and to get eSATA working properly I had to select ACHI in the BIOS, and install the proper JMicron drivers from their website. I can now hot plug my eSATA drive.

It's interesting because I have never used an eSATA before and have never even owned an External HDD before either with an eSATA interface. I'm looking into this driver problem to see if I can find what I need but at the moment not sure exactly but it does say on some other sites that there is an issue with the ASUS P5K board.

I plan on buying a new board soon and revamp my PC with some other bits too. Plan on buying a Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 2.66GHz 12MB-cache (1333FSB) Processor and also buying a Asus P5Q Pro motherboard and running those instead of what I've got. I also plan on getting a Coolermaster V8 CPU Cooler and a couple of Corsair Dominator memory modules (4GB) (TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF).

I'm hoping that this won't cost more than £480 to upgrade from my current system. I also plan on getting a better tower also, full size this time. The Coolermaster Stacker 832 is what I'm looking at, looks like a good case.

I'm sure that if I eventually end up building this into a machine instead that when I plug the External LaCie drive into the Asus P5Q Pro board it will probably be much different to this P5K.

Of course - if you install XP/Vista without AHCI enabled and then enable it, you have to make a registry change first to make it bootable.

That's strange because I didn't experience that with either my XP or Vista installation. Must only be certain circumstances.

Yes, I realise now that you can't just enable it and expect your Windows XP installation to still work as normal. I saw some people posting on other forums yesterday about this problem, had a read through some of it. One person said that to solve all your problems without having to reinstall XP again from scratch is to download the Intel Matrix Storage Manager.

I thought that would be a great idea so I tried but it said that my machine wasn't compatible with it, which is a shame really. I think at this point it's not worth wasting any more time trying to get this to work when I could be doing other things instead.

I plan on buying some new parts soon like I said above and then I can rebuild my PC into a much more powerful one. When I reach the point that I've gotta install Windows XP from scratch for the new PC I shall probably think about this again, considering that I should install it with AHCI enabled in the bios. Hopefully this new motherboard I get will be better than the P5K. The P5K is ok but when these problems happen like with this eSATA connection to it, I guess I'll just have to try things out and see what happens. One thing I certainly DON'T plan on doing at the moment is a complete reinstall of my machine, it would take ages to put all my programs and drivers and everything all back on again, such a waste of free time to have fun doing something else instead! :D

Maybe. I have no personal experience of it failing; it's just what I've read. Switching it on my win7 machine went smoothly, but then I made the registry change before trying, so *shrug*

The eSATA ports run from a JMicron controller, so I don't know how Intel Matrix software would fix that!
