Lappy new year!

I put it as a simple either/or because you appear to be implying that you can either do very little and get given some 'freebies' or you work hard to get the 'good job' - in that case of the two positions I know which one I'd rather be in so I don't feel that I'm hard done by if I've done the latter yet get taxed more to pay for others who are not as well off.

So you really dont mind working hard so that those who've not can be given the sort of thing you have to save for, for free, out of your tax?

Really?!

if a scheme such as this will allow more of the people who would previously not gain enough in the way of qualifications to now do so then I think it would be wholly worthwhile.

As if it'll do anything of the sort - it'll be used to irritate people on Facebook, argue on internet forums and download questionable things.

Like everyones computer is.

I don't get this.

I used to visit the library to use the internet quite happily. I didn't expect the government to sort me out with connectivity + hardware.
Saturday mornings there would be a queue to use it, but once you were on, you did what you had to and left.

New Labour. Hang the lot of them.

Wow i hardly think a laptop and the internet is a luxury item these days.

Fixed ^ - it may not be a luxury item, but it sure as hell isn't so important that it needs to be given out by the government.

I have zero problems with this - its a drop in the ocean tax wise.

That doesn't matter one bit. What matters to me is why these people deserve £500+ laptops? Are they so poor as to not be able to save up? If they are, then i'm sorry, but c'est la vie! And also this is costing £150 MILLION POUNDS. I don't think many people can comprehend that much money, but one thing i know for sure is that it could be used in a damn site better way.

Shame its been spun so anti labour as usual.

How can you NOT see what Labour are trying to do with this?

Good post ^^.

It seems that the harder you work (in school, university, your job) the more the government try to tax you to help the inadequate.

Everyone knows the kind - the ones who used to be suspended all the time in school, the ones who were always found smoking in the toilets, the ones who were always involved in fights, the ones who used to do **** all in class, the ones that used to bunk off. They're the ones that i am now supporting and buying laptops for their kids, who, no doubt are exactly the same as they were in school.

Welcome to Great Britain!!

Unfortunately :(

I don't get much of a choice in where my tax goes to. And no, I don't particularly begrudge 'my' taxes being spent on initiatives such as this either, given the choice I'd much rather be in my situation than in the situation of most who will be getting a free computer. I can recognise that I've been pretty lucky in life so far, sure there's been a bit of hard work along the way as well but I'm doing alright so if that means other people get to benefit from some tax money that I don't get to see again anyway I'm struggling to work up any enthusiasm for berating them.

Remarkably prescient of you. Maybe it will and maybe it won't but if it is used for schoolwork/applying for jobs/anything else that is useful by even 10% of those who are getting this credit then I reckon it doesn't count as a bad investment.

I'm having trouble understanding your point.

Effectively what you seem to be saying is that if somebody is worse off than you, then you dont really mind what the government gives them for free because hey, you'd rather not be them. This is weird.

Would you have the same attitude if the government announced a free car scheme for every who earnt less than £20k a year?

Because hey, you'd rather earn more, so who cares if they get a free car?

I'm saying that a few freebies doesn't mean that their situation suddenly becomes desirable. I just don't care enough to berate people for getting laptops from this initiative or indeed simply for getting by on the dole - thankfully there are legions of people who will take up the slack I leave in not doing my fair share in this regard.

In the unlikely event that the government decided to offer free cars to everyone on £20k or less per year I'd have questions to ask about it and the worth of it but they're somewhat different proposals in scale. However for the sake of argument the government did do that and I wouldn't benefit, I'm still not all that bothered. The above of course assumes that basic services are covered as per the strategic aims and objectives that all government departments and bodies have as part of their commitment to the public - after that point if the money is spent on areas of potentially more marginal benefit then that's fine by me.
