Laptop Insurance question?

Anybody know how much it would cost the university to insure a laptop so a pupil can take it home?

Just that last year we were supplied with laptops so we can also work at home/weekend/over the holidays, and this year it isnt.

Now my plan was to start a petition stating that we need them as compared to other courses who can study from books we cant to the same, and thus we are missing out on extra learning time outside the studio. Also stating its not possible allways go to work at uni as anyspare time we have outside the time needed for jobs will most likely be taken up by traveling to the uni, eg an extra couple of hours in the evening chances are hour+ will be used travelling to and from the city centre.
Then state that each laptop would cost the university £XX amount or they can cough up £XXXX to buy the software for each pupils own use.

After stating all this it would then say something like:
Below are the list of names that agree that pupils NEED the laptops to work at home. Please act accordingly.

(yes i realise i need to work on the wording, grammar, spelling etc but please answer the originial question)

Why should the university supply you with laptops and software? I have to buy all my own books, my own pc equipment and find the software to use. Doing architecture this is not cheap, not to mention all the model making equipment and printouts we have to do for presentations.

I paid extra to live close to my uni so I could use its facilities, even though they weren't 24hrs it still gave me time to use them when I needed. What course and uni are you at that you can't afford to a) live near to it and b) buy your own resources?

Why should the university have to provide you with a laptop? Unless you are somehow impared from reading / writing, or I know that dislexic etc pupils get them, you should have to buy a laptop yourself really.....

Everyone else does!

Exactly what I was thinking, the uni does not NEED to do anything, you want to study there, then you have to cough up the cash and sort out your studying. After all, the point in uni is not that it's spoon fed to you unlike at normal schools, it is that you take control of your learning which would mean you purchase the laptop etc.

it's design for digital media, nothing can be done without computers, apart from the initial sketching of ideas, and if you really wanted to go back to hand writing the 2000-3000 word essays.

it would be like studying biology without them supplying a frog to cut up.
or chemistry without supplying the chemicals to mix.

Also the campus is out of town, no halls of residents are built there.

edit: on top of all this we still need to buy our books and drawing equipment.

You cannot hand write anything for uni though. Pretty much everyone I know that goes to uni has bought their own laptop. I don't see the difference.

It's nothing like studying chemistry and them not providing the chemicals... You don't take the chemicals home do you...

And I'm studying computing, I can't write code by hand and run my applications if I write it on paper. But I bought a computer myself as that is what is expected (that or go into uni and work there, which I always find hard).

So yeah, you obviously are doing the only course that ever is based solely on computers and you need a laptop supplied by the uni...

So you chose a digital media course and don't have a computer? How are you posting?

Why should you be provided with free equipment? I do a Comp Eng course, yet I'm not supplied with any free equipment and I still have to buy all my programming bibles that cost at least £40 a time!

Surely if you have work to be done they have the facilities on campus / in-house for you to use, as mine does, and it's your responsibility to plan your time accordingly?

EDIT: Do Chemistry students get a bumper box of chemicals to take home at weekends?

i duhno if that last bit is sarcasm or not InvG (too ill with fresher's flu to properly think)

its just more the inconveniance of everything, I mean fair enough if it was only photoshop we used then fine, but since theres also....well.....i dont know how many other programmes we use.

and obviosuly i do own a laptop,
but i know last year many students didnt bring their own as they thought they would be getting one from the uni, and i can imagine its the same.

It's not like ours to keep, it's done much in the same way as a book out of the library, but instead of keeping for a couple of weeks we keep till the end of the uni year, so it would be much like the library not allowing us to take books out.

It's no diffract to any computer course. They will also have some (but not all software) free for you. Ask the IT guys what they have and what you are entitled to. Stop complaining and buy a laptop.

And how is that different to over computer courses where they will use many more programming languages and thus studios as well as some graphical studios.
Either work in the labs or get a laptop and get the software.

You get Adobe CS at less than 10% of the actual price because you're a student.

Not 10% OFF the original price, 10% OF the original price.

ok, want to know my costs?

saas pays me £3500
halls £4200
laptop £1000+

currently -£1700 and my parents cant afford ot give me a dime.

Again how is that any different to any other student and a laptop is not 1000+ you can get a perfectly good one for £300 second hand. Or a desktop for less then you can save the files to a usb stick.

I had many more costs than that, and my parents didn't give me any money as they can't. Yet I got through two years of uni buying all the gear I needed for my course.

Get a job?

Pretty much sums up the situation if he can't afford it.
