Hey Guys,

Got a weird one, hoping someone can point me in right direction here cos dont know where to start looking for the problem.

Got a user brought his daughters laptop into work. When she connects her laptop to wifi at home she has intermittent problems connecting to the internet, it will connect fine sometimes but others it wont... however, as soon as her laptop is connected to wifi everyone else in the household can't access the internet at all. When she disconnect's her laptop, everyone can connect fine. Dont think this is a router problem as apparently its even doing this when she goes to uni... when she tries connecting to their wifi no one else can connect lol :)

I dont have a wireless network at work & have no idea how to start to troubleshoot this, can anyone give me an idea as to possible cause?

Cheers

Ross

I wonder if the laptop is forcingthe router to switch wireless modes or something, perhaps forcing 802.11b or n when all other devices are on 802.11g or something.

Just a guess mind. I'm not 100% on how these routers connect with clients and whether they can transmit just one type or multiple types of traffic.

usual checks, drivers up to date, settings all correct. make sure it's not forcing a b connection which drops everyone elses. hard to troubleshoot without knowing the complete setup, my guess would be it's forcing things to connect using b!

cheers for responses guys... with wifi and router settings i'm a complete numpty... how do I check if its forcing a b connection? can you tell me what I need to look for and where?

it will be in the actual laptop driver setting somewhere...
you could perhaps log into the router and see if that tells you, but that varies between routers. usuall they have an ip address and you log in via a web interface, something like http://192.168.1.1 and go from there...
